GREENVILLE, Pa. -- A late goal by
Tyler Alexander forced overtime, but the Heidelberg University Men's Lacrosse team fell in double overtime to Thiel, 8-7. The Tomcats game-winner spoiled a spirited comeback effort by the Student Princes, who slipped to 3-4 overall.
Jacob Brickman opened the scoring less than three minutes in with a goal in transition that stemmed from a Tomcat turnover near midfield.
The Tomcats answered with a man-up goal three minutes later -- the first of six straight goals for the hosts.
Trailing 6-1 with six minutes left in the first half, Heidelberg scored three goals in quick succession.
Benjamin Evans tallied the first two -- one from the right side and one from the top. After
Trevor Ley won another faceoff,
Tyler Alexander scored from the right side. His goal lowered the 'Berg deficit to two at halftime.
Thiel got one back midway through the third and led 7-4.
With 5:20 remaining in the third, Evans responded with a goal from the right wing. Taking a feed from
Jacob Morgan, Evans bounced a shot past the Tomcats goalkeeper. The tally gave Evans a hat trick, and secured the third assist for Morgan.
The Berg inched closer with a marker 23 seconds into the fourth quarter. Working the ball counterclockwise around the perimeter,
Rayce Septer took a shot from the right side that found the net.
Heidelberg remained down by a goal until the waning seconds of the fourth quarter. Triggering a restart with nine seconds left,
Jacob Brickman found a cutting Alexander in the middle. Catching and shooting, Alexander snuck a quick shot inside the left post with three seconds left.
Both sides had multiple opportunities in a scoreless first overtime, but Thiel won the game midway through the second extra period.
Wilson Runnette made 14 saves in the loss. In addition to his trio of assists, Morgan caused three turnovers.
Heidelberg returns to action at home on Wednesday. Westminster visits Hoernemann Stadium for a 6 p.m. game.
