TIFFIN -- Another superb defensive effort by the Heidelberg University Men's Lacrosse team helped lift the Student Princes to a 4-2 win over Hiram College. Goalkeeper
Wilson Runnette, who entered the game ranked second in the nation with a 4.75 goals against average, made nine saves in the win.
Heidelberg improved to 3-3 on the season. The win marks the program's first-ever win over a school from the North Coast Athletic Conference.
Hiram (4-3) got on the board first when Noah Pilgram scored early at the 13:23 mark. Three minutes later,
Jacob Morgan nailed one in the back of the net off an assist from
Quincy Grevious to tie the game at 1-1.
Neither team got anything going offensively the rest of the quarter, taking the 1-1 lead into the second. Heidelberg took the lead 2-1 early in the second when
Jacob Brickman threw one in off a pass from
Tyler Alexander. The Terriers responded in the eighth minute with a goal of their own to tie it 2-2.
Still tied at two in the third, Alexander used a pass from Brickman to give HU a 3-2 lead. The Berg scored an insurance goal midway through the fourth quarter. Alexander scored the final goal to give HU a 4-2 advantage.
The two-goal lead was plenty for Runnette and the stout 'Berg defense. The Tricolor continued to stymie the Terriers down the stretch. Hiram averaged 16.8 goals per game before their trip to Tiffin.
Defensive leaders for Heidelberg were
Braxton Hammond who tallied a team-high three caused turnovers.
Sonny Varrati,
Jacob Morgan, and
Jonathon Brickman all notched two in the win.
Hammond also secured six ground balls while brothers Jonathon and
Jacob Brickman both totaled four apiece.
