Softball rebounds with sweep at Capital

COLUMBUS -- The Heidelberg University softball team bounced back from a rough Sunday by sweeping a conference doubleheader on the road, beating Capital University, 4-0 and 8-1.  Jessica Voitko fired a three-hit shutout in the opener and Caitlin Dems allowed one run on five hits -- both twirling gems against the Comets.

Shortstop Emma Dean remained scorching-hot at the plate, going 5-for-6 on Monday with three doubles.  She is nine for her last 11 with two walks.

Heidelberg improved to 12-13 overall and 2-2 in the OAC.

GAME ONE:  BERG 4-8-1   CAP 0-3-1

Scoreless through five, Gabbie Stallbaum started off the sixth with a double to right center.  After Dean hit an infield single, Ellie Tressler drove in a pair with a double to the gap in left center.  Voitko drove in Tressler with a groundout later in the inning.

In the seventh, HU added another run when Dean doubled home Hanna Blasinsky.

The Comets threatened in the bottom of the seventh, but a sensational leaping, diving grab on a line drive to second by Caitlynn Newlen secured the shutout for Voitko.

Voitko (7-6) fanned three and walked two in the complete game shutout, the first of her career.

GAME TWO:  BERG 8-9-0   CAP 1-5-2

Dean doubled in Stallbaum in the top of the first, but the hosts answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame.

The score remained tied until the fifth.  Kailyn Kroll walked and was lifted for pinch runner Aubree Baker. Baker moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Logyn Chamberlin and to third on an infield single by Blasinsky.  Stallbaum broke the tie, mashing a two-out double up the gap in left center.

Not content with a two-run lead, HU poured it on in the seventh.  Chamberlin singled and sent Halie Monhollen to third.  An infield single by Blasinsky allowed Monhollen to score.  Dean followed with a single to center which plated Chamberlin.  After Tressler was plunked by a pitch, Murissa Drown drove in Blasinsky with a single down the left field line.  Meghan Bame delivered a two-run single that capped a five run inning.

Dems (3-1) struck out three and walked one in her longest outing since Florida.

ALUMNI NOTE:

In between the games on Sunday, former members of the Heidelberg softball program were honored on Alumni Day.  Included were Leah Bouillon, Kat Brady, Joanna Catalano, Amy Richards Chamberlin, Erin Chapman, Shelby Miller, Hannah Ours, Megan (Reinhart) Hoffert, Amber (Schwochow) Mills, Connie Schar, and Donna Palmer.

Regrettably, a miscommunication between the team staff and Office of Athletics personnel resulted in an incomplete introduction of Chamberlin, Palmer and Schar. Heidelberg softball and the Office of Athletics remain beholden to each and every Student Prince who has given their time, energy and heart for the betterment of our campus community.
