TIFFIN -- Hours after completing their annual team Easter egg hunt, the Heidelberg University softball team found two more eggs -- goose eggs, to be exact -- on the scoreboard. HU blanked visiting Wilmington College, 6-0, in both halves of an OAC doubleheader. Gems from starters
Jessica Voitko and
Caitlin Dems pushed The Berg to 13-12 on the season and 4-2 in the conference.
Meghan Bame and
Emma Dean each picked up four hits on the day, while
Murissa Drown and
Ellie Tressler had three. Tressler drove in five runs and Bame drove in three.
GAME ONE: BERG 6-11-1 WILM 0-4-0
Hanna Blasinski and Drown singled in the bottom of the first and scored on a single to right center by Tressler. Bame followed with a double to deep left field, scoring Tressler.
Up 3-0, Drown led off the third with a double to left. Dean followed with a triple to the wall in right center, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Tressler.
In the fifth, Bame singled home pinch runner
Morgan Woycitzky.
Voitko limited Wilmington to four hits, throwing her second complete game shutout of the week. She walked two, but both were erased on line drive double plays -- one on a comebacker to the circle, and the other on a ball down the right field line that
Gabbie Stallbaum made a terrific running grab to haul in.
GAME TWO: BERG 6-11-1 WILM 0-6-1
Scoreless in the bottom of the third, Heidelberg scored four unearned runs. Stallbaum reached on a dropped line drive hit to second, then moved to second on a sacrifice by Blasinsky. Drown followed with a clutch RBI single. Woycitzky entered and promptly swiped second. Off the end of her bat, Dean dropped in a double to shallow left that drove in the speedy Woycitzky. Pinch runner Aubree Baker sprinted home on a single to right center by Tressler. After stealing second, Tressler scored on a bloop single by Bame.
In the fifth, Tressler contributed yet another RBI hit -- a double to right center that scored Dean from first. Pinch hitter
Kailyn Kroll added an RBI double in the sixth that plated
Caitlynn Newlen.
All the while, Dems kept the Quakers quaking. She allowed six hits and struck out three. As they did in the opener, the 'Berg defense was sharp -- including a leaping grab into the backstop netting by Tressler which elicited a "Hooray!" from members of the crowd.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
In between games, Heidelberg softball welcomed roughly 20 of their Li'l Berg Buddies pen pals to Frann's Field … Going 9-for-12 on the week, Dean raised her season average to .506. She has 17 doubles through 27 games -- four shy of the single-season record set by Marissa Smego in 2016 … Tressler has a hit in 10 straight games … Voitko and Dems lowered their ERAs to 2.11 and 2.83 respectively.
