Baseball stumbles at Marietta

MARIETTA – The Heidelberg University baseball team dropped both halves of a doubleheader at No. 14 Marietta.  The Pioneers won 11-5 in the opener, then walked off with a 7-5 win in 10 innings in the nightcap.

Heidelberg slipped to 16-21 overall, 5-11 in the OAC.

GAME ONE: MAR 11-13-1   BERG 5-9-2

Marietta scored one in the first, three in the second and two in the third, taking a 6-0 lead into the sixth.  HU got on the board when Camden Farley hit his third home run of the season -- a two-run shot to center.

A triple off the bat of Braedy Limke plated Reece McNeely in the sixth, but Heidelberg still trailed, 8-3.

Andrew Pokley drew a one-out walk in the seventh and was lifted for pinch runner Colin Small.  Small sprinted home on a double down the left field line by Cort Kramer.  Kramer later scored on a ground out by Limke.

Leading 9-5, Marietta added two more down the stretch.

GAME TWO:  MAR 9-12-1  BERG 7-11-4 (10 inn.)

RBI singles by Adam McVicker and Andrew Cook put The Berg up two in the top of the first.

After Marietta tied the game, Heidelberg rebounded for a run in the fourth when McNeely drove in Kramer with a single to right.

The Pioneers scored twice in the sixth, taking a 4-3 lead.  Once again, HU responded in short order.  Aidan Corrigan launched a solo home run to right -- his third of the season.

Continuing with the seesaw action on the field, Marietta plated three in the seventh and led, 7-4.

Unwilling to go quietly, the Student Princes drew even.  Kramer hit a home run to right -- his first career longball.  After a walk to Kyle Krummen, Limke lifted his fifth home run of the campaign over the wall in left -- tying the game at seven.

The score remained tied at seven until a walk-off two-run home run by Brett Carson in the 10th.

UP NEXT:

The Student Princes will host Depauw on Sunday.  First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
