Baseball moves to 2-0

WESTFIELD, Indiana -- The Heidelberg University baseball team moved to 2-0 for the first time since 2018 with a 6-2 victory over Wabash College.  A three-run fourth inning and another strong start on the mound proved to be the difference.

Making his first career start, Jackson Powers went five full innings, allowing four hits and one earned run.  He struck out seven and did not yield a walk.

Offensively, Kyle Krummen had two hits and drove in three runs.  Braedy Limke and Adam McVicker also picked up two hits apiece.

Wabash (4-2) picked up a run in the first, but Heidelberg answered immediately.  Leading off the bottom of the first, Limke doubled to right and scored on a double to left center by McVicker.

Still tied in the home half of the fourth, Zane Mirgon drew a one-out walk and scampered to third on a single by Andrew Pokley, who advanced on the throw.  With two outs, Krummen delivered a clutch single to right that plated two runs.  After stealing second, Krummen came around to score on a single by Limke.

Down 4-1, the Little Giants threatened in the top of the fifth.  An error, a hit batter and a single loaded the bases with one out.  Following a strikeout, Wabash pushed a run across with a hit batsman.  Powers avoided further damage by inducing a pop up.

Ahead 4-2, HU added an insurance run in the sixth when Krummen singled home Reece McNeely. In the seventh, McVicker hit a leadoff double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Thomas Sauer.

Ridge Clark, Corey Brafford and Andrew Cook combined for four innings of shutout baseball.

The win over the Little Giants was Heidelberg's first win over Wabash at the Crossroads Crossover in three tries.

The Student Princes return to action on Saturday, taking on Kean in Punta Gorda, Florida.  Heidelberg will play eight varsity games at the Snowbird Classic.  Live stats will be provided for each contest, with links available at BergAthletics.com.
