PUNTA GORDA, Florida – Despite a two-homer afternoon from
Andrew Cook, the Heidelberg University baseball team dropped the first game of an eight-game set at the Snowbird Classic. In a wild affair, HU was unable to complete a comeback, resulting in a 11-10 defeat to Kean.
Three Heidelberg players had multi-hit games. Cook's two hits resulted in home runs which tallied a team-high four RBI.
Braedy Limke and
Andrew Pokley also added two hits each.
Jackson Powers got the start for The Berg, going four innings, allowing five hits and one run. He fanned six and walked three.
The Student Princes got out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first following a few walks and an error that allowed
Aidan Corrigan to clear the bases for The Berg. Kean was able to get a run back in the bottom half of the inning.
With the score still 3-1, HU opened things up with a three-run third inning, which included a base hit from
Alex McRandal that scored two runs.
Kyle Krummen led off the fourth with a double and Braeden Limke drove him in with a base hit to right field.
Down 7-1, the Cougars were able to tally three runs in the fifth.
The ensuing inning saw Kean take the lead, 11-7, following a seven-run inning which included four hits for the Cougars.
Down but not out, Heidelberg was able to get a run back in the seventh following a Cook home run to left field. In the bottom of the inning, center fielder
Adam McVicker had a nice diving catch to save a hit.
With two outs in the eighth, Cook came up in the clutch again as he hit his second home run to left field with two runners on base. The blast cut the 'Berg deficit down to 1.
Unfortunately, HU stranded the tying run in the ninth.
The Student Princes will be back in action tomorrow as they will play Swarthmore in a doubleheader. Game one is set for 10:30 a.m.
