Lacrosse opens season with 16-3 win

TIFFIN – The Heidelberg University men's lacrosse team opened up the 2023 season with a 16- win versus Mount St. Joseph University. 

Tyler Alexander and Benjamin Evans who both scored five goals apiece. Evans added two assists and finished with seven points.  

Heidelberg scored the first goal of the game when freshman Rayce Septer put one in the net for his first collegiate goal. With 8:17 on the clock in the first quarter, the Lions got on the board following a Luke Hurley goal to tie it at 1-1. 

HU ended a five minute dry spell on offense for both teams when Alexander netted one off an assist from Evans to make the score 2-1.

A Jacob Brickman goal stretched the HU lead to 3-1 after the first quarter. 

Evans got things going for Heidelberg early in the second quarter as he put one in the back of the net for his first career goal at the 14:33 mark. Less than a minute later, Evans got a second one off of an assist from Jacob Brickman to make the score 5-1. 

The Student Princes continued their dominance in the second quarter as Alexander scored his second goal following a MSJ turnover making it 6-1. 

Alexander would not be denied today for the berg as put in his third goal on the day with 5:19 left in the first half. 

The Septer brothers scored the next two goals for The Berg. Jayden Septer netted his first goal of the season at the 1:54 mark, Rayce scored his second of the day to make it 9-1 HU at the break. 

Both teams started slow offensively to begin the second half. HU broke the scoreless streak with 7:25 on the clock when Evans put one in to increase the Berg lead to 10-1. Nine seconds later Alexander scored another goal for HU. 

Evans continued his hot streak on the field when he took a pass from Jacob Brickman and put it in the back of the net for a goal.  

Ahead 12-1, HU again scored on yet another Alexander shot on an assist from Jacob Morgan late in the third. 

The Lions would finally break the HU 12-0 run and score on a Mason Meilinger shot. Heidelberg would answer quickly with an Evans goal making it 14-2. 

Senior Maximillian Hatty joined in on the scoring action for The Berg as he put the ball in with 13:26 left in the game. Following a Heidelberg turnover, MSJ capitalized with a goal from Antoine Jackson to cut the deficit to 15-3. 

With 3:21 on the clock, Jayden Septer scored his second goal of the game which helped seal the 16-3 win for the Berg. 

Heidelberg won 18-of-23 faceoffs, with Jayden Septer going 11-for-13 and Rayce Septer going 7-for-10.  

Making his first career start, Wilson Runnette had six saves for the Berg.

The Student Princes will travel to Trine University on Wednesday to take on the Thunder. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
