TIFFIN -- In one of the more disappointing days in recent memory at Peaceful Valley, the Heidelberg University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to "host" John Carroll University. The games -- 9-8 in 13 innings and 8-5 in 8 innings -- were moved to HU because of field conditions in University Heights.
GAME ONE: JCU 9-19-1 BERG 8-13-1 (13 innings)
Heidelberg -- batting as the visitors -- scored first, plating two runs in the top of the third. John Carroll responded with four in the bottom of the inning.
Later, down 6-3, Heidelberg got a run back when
Andrew Pokley singled home
Kyle Krummen in the fifth.
In the sixth, HU tied it up with the help of some extra-base hits.
Cayden Rollins led off with a home run to left center.
Adam McVicker followed with a double, then scored on a triple by
Camden Farley. Farley crossed the plate on a single by
Keaton Mark.
The score remained tied at six until the 10th inning. Farley hit a two-run home run to left, putting HU ahead, 8-6. John Carroll returned the favor in the bottom of the frame.
Heidelberg stranded runners on third in the 11th and the 13th. Then, in the bottom of the 13th, JCU won with a walk-off home run.
GAME TWO: JCU 8-10-1 BERG 5-10-2
The Blue Streaks scored twice in the bottom of the first, but HU answered in the top of the second.
Seth Scoville drove in DeVore with a single up the middle.
In the third, McVicker doubled in
Alex McRandal and then scored on a base hit by DeVore.
JCU tied the game in the fourth and took a 4-3 lead in the fifth.
Andrew Cook tied the game in the sixth with a solo home run to left center.
After the Blue Streaks regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth, HU answered once more.
Kyle Mottice delivered a game-tying single up the middle, scoring McVicker.
Walks killed Heidelberg in the bottom of the seventh as JCU scored three times without the aid of a base hit.
After HU went quietly in the top of the eighth, the game was halted because of darkness.
