PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The Heidelberg University baseball team returned to its winning ways on Monday. The Student Princes beat Thiel, 9-6, in a back and forth contest at the Snowbird Classic
With the win, Heidelberg improved to 3-3 on the season. Thiel dropped to 1-1 on the season.
Robert Hunt,
Keaton Mark,
Adam McVicker, and
Seth Scoville all had multi-hit performances to lead the way offensively for The Berg.
The scoring started early for the Thiel, as they struck in the top of the first. Seth Johnson led off the first inning with a triple off the left field wall and came around to score on an RBI single by Anthony Rago.
The Students Princes struck back in the 2nd inning with four runs of their own. Scoville singled, advanced to second on a balk, stole third, and advanced home on a passed ball.
Thomas Sauer reached on a walk, advanced on a passed ball and a balk, then scored on an RBI bunt single by
Robert Hunt. Hunt was brought in on an RBI double by
Keaton Mark. Mark came around to score on a bloop single by
Eric DeVore.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Student Princes struck again.
Deaunte Fleming belted a two-run homer to deep left center -- his first of the season. The hits kept coming for The Berg as following a
Zane Mirgon walk, Scoville punched a single through the left side and was brought home on a double to right center by Sauer.
Thiel managed to make things interesting over the course of the final three frames plating four runs, highlighted by a 2-run homer via Nick Jacobs.
The Students Princes were able to add some insurance in the bottom of the 8th. Mark doubled down the left field line and stole third on the following pitch -- his second of the day. He scored on an RBI double to deep center field by McVicker.
On the mound for Heidelberg, starter
Jake Hall went 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out five and earning his first win of the season. In relief,
Dylan Matusak threw 1.2 innings, allowing three runs on two hits, striking out two.
John Hassler closed out the final two innings, allowing no hits or runs, earning his first save of the season.
Once again the Student Princes dominated the base paths stealing six bases. The Student Princes now have 24 stolen bases through six games.
Heidelberg is back in action on Wednesday, taking on Lebanon Valley at 3pm.
