Baseball Stumbles on Sunday

Port Charlotte, FL - The Heidelberg University baseball team dropped its Sunday afternoon matchup, 13-3, to the Misericordia University Cougars as the 'Berg continues its spring break southern swing.

The setback moves the Student Princes 2-2 overall and marks the first loss of the Florida trip.

The matchup remained scoreless through three inning, until the Cougars tallied three runs in the top of the fourth. A three-run home run off of 'Berg starter Corbin Caplan put the Cougars ahead. Caplan threw four full, surrendered five hits, three runs, and notched one strikeout. Caplan claimed the loss on Sunday, his second of the year.

The Student Princes trimmed the deficit to two when Eric DeVore tallied his second homerun of the year off of Misercordia starter Isaac Snyder. The homerun against the Cougars marks DeVore's second in as many days after going yard against Swarthmore on Saturday.

The Cougars added another run in the fifth, and again the Berg answered in the bottom half of the frame. A sacrifice ground out by Sam Runyan scored Aidan Corrigan to cut the Misericordia advantage to two, 4-2.

Misericordia heated up in the top of the sixth when the Cougars tacked on three runs forcing another pitching change for the 'Berg. The Cougars added another run in the top of the seventh, before the Berg could answer. Memphis Cutshall slapped an RBI single to score Corrigan and reduce the deficit to 8-3.

Three more Cougar runs in the top of the eighth and a pair of runs in the closing frame stymied any possibility of a 'Berg comeback.

Devore led the 'Berg at the plate going 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI, his sixth of the year.

The Student Princes continue action in the Sunshine State tomorrow afternoon as they battle regional foe Thiel College. First pitch is slated for 2p.m.
