DEFIANCE, Ohio -- Though it was significantly warmer on Wednesday, the Heidelberg University softball team suffered the same fate it did on Tuesday -- settling for a doubleheader split. Heidelberg took the opener from Defiance, 5-2, then lost the nightcap, 7-4.
Heidelberg moved to 10-6 on the season.
Emma Dean collected four hits on the day while
Kat Brady tallied three.
GAME ONE: BERG 5-8-0 DEF 2-8-0
Heidelberg jumped out to an early lead.
Murissa Drown bounced a single up the middle and plated pinch runner
Courtney Bryson, giving HU a 1-0 advantage in the first.
Wednesday's hero
Meghan Bame hit a two-run single in the third that drove in
Hanna Blasinsky and
Gabbie Stallbaum in the second.
Defiance trailed 3-0 until they struck for two in the sixth. Centerfielder
Kat Brady threw out the potential tying run at the plate on a single.
In the top of the seventh,
Kalli Sowers drove in a pair of insurance runs with a base hit down the left field line.
Caitlin Dems (3-3) struck out two and allowed two runs in 5.2 innings, picking up the win.
Payton Scheid earned her second save of the year, holding the Yellow Jackets scoreless over the final four outs.
GAME TWO: DEF 7-12-1 BERG 4-6-2
Kat Brady walked to lead off the nightcap, then stole second and advanced to third.
Riley Cruse hit a sacrifice fly, plating Brady.
Defiance answered with a sacrifice fly of their own in the bottom of the inning. The hosts tacked on two more in the third.
Ryann Ramacciatti tied the game at 3-3, driving in a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.
Emma Dean gave HU the lead in the fifth. Brady singled and advanced to third on a sac bunt by Stallbaum. With two outs, Dean delivered a single to left center that scored Brady.
The Yellow Jackets regained the lead with four unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth.
The Student Princes brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but were unable to push runs across.
