Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Bruder hangs eight on Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio -- Alex Bruder set a career high with eight goals as the Heidelberg University men's lacrosse team beat Wilmington College, 16-6, in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams.  The win is the first career victory for first-year Head Coach Mark Cyron, and the first win between the pipes for goalkeeper Cian Howery.

"We had a lot of guys step up and have a big game for us," said Cyron. "That's what it takes to win a conference game."

Bruder opened the scoring in the game's third minute, beating the goalkeeper from the left side.  After winning the faceoff, Heidelberg doubled their lead on the next position.  Tyler Alexander took a feed from Jacob Brickman and scored on a low shot from 35 feet away.

HU went up 3-0 with a man-up goal by Jaydon Septer midway through the first quarter.

The Quakers scored a pair of goals in a minute, cutting into the Heidelberg lead.

Bruder scored again with 2:12 left in the first, avoiding a defender and scoring from out top.

HU led 4-3 after the first quarter.

In the second, Bruder tallied his third of the game.  Moving to his right, he stopped, spun back inside and beat the WC goalkeeper.

Nine minutes of scoreless action elapsed before David Weaver scored a man-up goal from out top.  The Quakers answered moments later.

Ahead 6-4 in the final minute of the half, Jacob Brickman gave The Berg a boost -- bouncing a shot that beat the keeper high.

Wilmington scored very early in the third and trailed 7-5.  Two minutes later, Nolan Hatten led a counter attack up the field and fired to Jacob Brickman near the crease. Brickman wasted no time, picking up his second goal of the game.  His goal ignited an 8-0 run for the Student Princes.

pKilling off a penalty, Kevin Smith blocked a Quaker shot.  Jonny Brickman picked up the ground ball and sprinted ahead.  Opting to shoot instead of pass, the Brickman used the long pole to shoot past the WC goalkeeper, scoring HU's second man-down goal of the year..

Bruder scored the next four goals, helping Heidelberg put the game out of reach.  Shortly after  Bruder tallied the first goal of the fourth quarter, Smith notched his first collegiate goal on a counter.  Smith, sprinting up the right side, halted long enough to score from 50 feet out.

Jacob Morgan registered his first collegiate point midway through the fourth, assisting on Weaver's second goal of the game.

Wilmington ended the 8-0 run with a goal under the four-minute mark.

The scoring ended with Bruder's eighth of the game with less than two to play.  With eight goals, Bruder sits tied for second in the Heidelberg record book for goals in a game.

Heidelberg won 20-of-24 faceoffs, including 18 by Septer.

Howery made 11 saves in the win.

"I am so proud of our team," said Cyron. "They competed for 60 minutes and we were able to build some confidence."

The Student Princes visit Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday. Gametime in Berea is slated for 7 p.m.
