Baseball earns first W on turf

TIFFIN -- As a light drizzle fell on Peaceful Valley, the Heidelberg University baseball team picked up its first win on the new turf infield, upending Albion College, 6-2.  Adam McVicker had two hits and scored two runs as the Student Princes snapped a three-game losing streak.

The Britons took the lead in the top of the first on a two-run home run to left center.

Heidelberg regrouped in the bottom of the second.  Adam McVicker doubled to left and moved to third on a sharp single by Deaunte Fleming.  With two outs, Seth Scoville contributed a two-run single through the left side and moved to second on the throw home.  Andrew Pokley followed with a base hit back through the box and into center.  Scoville scored easily, giving HU a 3-2 lead.

An errant throw on what could have been a double play allowed Heidelberg to scratch across another run in the fifth.

In the sixth, McVicker reached on an infield single and moved to second on a throwing error.  With one out, he got a great read on a single to center by Cayden Rollins and scored easily.

A three-base error allowed Pokley to reach in the seventh. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Robert Hunt and gave HU a 6-2 advantage.

'Berg starter Corbin Caplan (1-2) settled in after the first inning homer.  He threw six innings and scattered five hits while striking out five.  The win was the first collegiate victory for the freshman southpaw.

Ryan Keane (Sv., 1) earned the save by throwing three innings.  He retired all nine batters he faced.

The Student Princes finished with seven hits on the day.

Heidelberg was scheduled to play a single game at Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday.  However, the forecast for Delaware, Ohio, USA, does not look favorable.  Thus, the game has been moved to Thursday.
