TIFFIN -- It didn't quite go according to plan, but the Heidelberg University baseball team unveiled its new turf infield on Sunday. No. 18 Adrian College traveled to Peaceful Valley for a twinbill and won both games. The Bulldogs scored late in both games, winning 4-1 and 5-4.
The first varsity run on the new turf was scored by
Robert Hunt in the third inning of the first game. Hunt reached with an infield single and stole second. He scored on a single by
Eric DeVore.
Adrian tied the game in the sixth, then took the lead in the eighth with a two-run home run. The Bulldogs tacked on an insurance run in the ninth.
In the nightcap, Adrian scored single runs in the top of the first and the third innings. Down 2-0, DeVore doubled to left center, driving in Hunt and
Keaton Mark.
The game remained tied until the seventh.
Andrew Pokley delivered a two-out double down the left field line that chased home
Camden Farley.
In the top of the eighth, a pair of walks with the bases loaded pushed the Bulldogs ahead, 4-3.
Undaunted, Mark took it upon himself to tie the game in the bottom of the frame. He doubled to the gap in right center, then stole third. An error on the throw allowed him to score the game tying run.
A ninth-inning solo homer by AJ Miranda -- his second of the day -- provided the margin of victory for the visitors. Heidelberg got the tying run into scoring position in the ninth, but could not produce the run.
Heidelberg, now 5-7, welcomes Albion to Peaceful Valley on Tuesday. The single game is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
