TIFFIN -- A little Frann's Field Magic helped lift the Heidelberg University softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Bluffton. HU won the first game, 6-5, in nine innings, then ran away with the nightcap, 10-3. The wins, which came on an absolutely stunning March afternoon, pushed Heidelberg's record to 6-2 overall.
The top two batters in the 'Berg line up,
Kat Brady and
Hanna Blasinsky, combined for nine hits and six runs on the afternoon.
Maddie Gossard added three hits while six others had two hits.
Heidelberg returns to action this weekend, but the schedule has changed. Originally slated for Saturday, Heidelberg will host Alma on Sunday at 2 p.m.
GAME ONE: BERG 6-8-3 BLUFFTON 5-7-1
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the second, the Student Princes got to work.
Kalli Sowers drove in
Gabbie Stallbaum with a single through the left side of the infield. With two outs, Blasinsky doubled down the left field line, which plated Sowers and
Halie Monhollen. Brady scored the fourth run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Ahead 4-1 in the fourth, Heidelberg added another run when Brady again scored on a wild pitch.
Heidelberg rode the 5-1 lead into the sixth, but two costly dropped fly balls helped the Beavers tie the game.
Still tied in the ninth, Brady -- the reigning OAC Hitter of the Week -- slapped a single to left. Blasinsky, intending to sacrifice, reached on a bunt single. After a walk to
Emma Dean,
Jessica Voitko sent a grounder to second, where it was misplayed. Brady scored easily, securing the win.
Starter
Caitlin Dems worked 5+ innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits.
Payton Scheid (1-0) came on in the sixth and went the final four frames to pick up her first collegiate victory. She allowed two hits and fanned one.
GAME TWO: BERG 10-16-1 BLUFFTON 3-9-3
As they did in the opener, Bluffton (3-7) plated a run in the top of the first. Undaunted, Heidelberg answered immediately. Brady started with a bunt single, then stole second. Blasinsky followed with a bunt single, but a throwing error allowed Brady to score. Dean singled up the middle, which allowed Blasinsky -- who had moved to second on the throwing error -- to score the go-ahead run.
Heidelberg loaded the bases in the second, and with two outs, Dean delivered a bases-clearing double to the gap in left center. Not to be outdone,
Murissa Drown laced a double to the gap in right center, scoring Dean. The Student Princes led 6-1.
The Beavers scored single runs in the fourth and the sixth inning, getting to within three.
Singles by Drown, Stallbaum and
Meghan Bame loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth for Heidelberg, thirsty for insurance runs. Gossard, a senior, delivered. She ripped a two-run single up the middle, scoring Stallbaum and pinch runner
Grace Anthony. After Bame sprinted home on a wild pitch,
Raye Hammond contributed an RBI single to left. .
Riley Cruse (1-0) picked up her first win of the season, going 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on nine hits.
Maggie Hoffman earned the save, throwing 1.2 innings of scoreless softball. She didn't allow Bluffton to poke in a hit.
