WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Despite a valiant effort, the Heidelberg University men's lacrosse team lost on the road on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon. The Student Princes lost to Washington & Jefferson, 12-10.
Alex Bruder had four goals for Heidelberg, with
David Weaver and
Ben Evans each adding three.
The Presidents struck first blood, but man-up goals by Evans and Bruder 44 seconds apart midway through the period gave the Student Princes a 2-1 lead after the first quarter.
W&J scored the first two and last two goals of the second quarter. Sandwiched in between were tallies from Bruder and Weaver. The hosts led 5-4 at halftime.
Out of the locker room, the Student Princes scored the first four goals of the second half -- including a man-down goal by Weaver. W&J's Sam Snider scored twice late in the third, but The Berg still led 8-7 after three.
Weaver and Bruder scored two of the first three goals in the fourth, giving HU a 10-8 lead with 10:08 left. The Presidents scored the final four goals of the contest, however. W&J tied the game with 5:42 left, then took the lead with 2:04 to play.
Jaydon Septer won 14-of-24 faceoffs and had nine ground balls.
Jason Mills collected six ground balls.
Cian Howery made 12 saves.
Heidelberg hosts Alma College on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Hoernemann Stadium.
