TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University men's basketball team led wire-to-wire in a much-needed 31-point win over Ohio Northern on Wednesday. The Student Princes shot 60.6% from the floor and had 54 points in the paint in the 95-64 win over the Polar Bears.
The victory was the 100th career win for Head Coach
Andy Bucheit, now in his seventh year. Bucheit is only the second 'Berg coach to hit the milestone, joining Heidelberg legend John Hill who won 357 games from 1977-2002.
Emmanuel Perdue had a quiet 22 points -- except a loud fast-break dunk in the first half -- and was one of four in double figures.
Eric Panning,
Zane Leitwein and
Dylan Woods each had 12 points. Woods added five assists.
An 8-0 run midway through the first period helped Heidelberg (17-5, 12-4 OAC) open up a 19-9 lead with 12:07 left. Four minutes later, another 8-0 jaunt inflated the lead to 19 at 35-16.
With 0.8 seconds left, Perdue drew a foul on a 3-point attempt. He buried all three attempts from the line and helped HU push their lead to 20 at half, 45-25.
Ohio Northern (9-13, 3-12 OAC), playing shorthanded, never got the deficit into the teens in the second half. Heidelberg always had an answer, and led by as many as 35. Near the end of the game, Keyshawn Harris delivered a jaw-dropping back-the-back feed to
Gage Lackey, who hammered it home with a two-handed dunk -- bringing the crowd to its feet.
Superb ball movement yielded a season-high 23 assists for Heidelberg.
Heidelberg welcomes No. 2 Marietta on Saturday. The tip -- which will follow Heidelberg's Senior Day festivities -- is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
