No. 2 Pioneers spoil MBB Senior Day

TIFFIN, OH — The Heidelberg University men's basketball team fell to the No. 2 Marietta Pioneers, 86-62 in the 2021-22 regular season finale.

Prior to the tipoff, Head Coach Andy Bucheit and crew honored seniors Jacob Logsdon, Dylan Woods, Seth Hohman, Isaiah Flood, and Will Swartz for their dedication to the program and various accomplishments as Berg student-athletes.

The Pioneers, riding a 19-game unbeaten streak, were looking to remain unbeaten in Ohio Athletic Conference play, while the Student Princes were eager to avenge a 16-point loss (100-84) from January.

It was a high-tempo from the tip and the Berg gave the nation's number two team all it could handle in the opening stanza. The first half saw six ties and six lead changes in the first half. The Pioneers took a two-point advantage into the half as a fade-away three from Emmanuel Perdue at the buzzer missed the mark.

Perdue finished with a team-high 18 points on 8-of-14 (57.1%) from the floor. The Shaker Heights native also tallied three rebounds, one block and one assist in the loss.

Isaiah Young and Zane Leitwein also finished in double figures against the high-powered Pios recording 17 points (8-of-10; 80%) and 13 points (5-of-10; 50%) respectively. Eric Panning led the Tricolor in rebounds with seven, followed by Leitwein (4), Perdue (3) and Young (3).

As a unit, the Student Princes were more efficient offensively, shooting 44.3% (27-of-61) from the field. The difference was under the basket as Marietta out-rebounded the 'Berg 44 to 30 with a 17-8 advantage on the offensive end of the floor, leading to a 22-8 Marietta advantage in second chance points.

Marietta began the second half with a 12-5 run in the opening five minutes of the frame. The Student Princes battled back, but would not be able to erase the deficit. Marietta was deadly from beyond the arc, shooting 9-of-13 from long range in the second half.

The Heidelberg men close the 2021-22 regular season 17-6 overall, 12-5 against Ohio Athletic Conference competition. The No. 2 Pioneers improved to 22-2 overall, a perfect 17-0 in the OAC, and will be the number one seed in the OAC Tourney.

The Student Prince 12-5 mark earns them the No. 3 seed in the OAC Tournament which tips off next week. The Berg will host No. 6 Capital in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m.  Note: As per OAC guidelines, parent passes are not valid for postseason play ... Tickets are on sale now.
