TIFFIN-- Following a hard fought game on Wednesday against Baldwin Wallace, the Heidelberg Women's basketball team was back in action on Saturday playing host to conference foe Mount Union. The Purple Raiders were too much for Heideleberg, resulting in an 80-46 defeat.
Heidelberg falls to 1-6 on the season (0-2 OAC) while Mount Union improves to 4-3 overall (1-0 OAC).
Hallie Rogers led all Heidelberg scorers with 10 while
Elisha Carter chipped in 8.
The 'Berg would see themselves in an early 5-0 hole as the Purple Raiders got off to a quick start. But the home team would not be rattled. A
Taylor Ratliff three pointer with 5:58 on the clock would give Heidelberg the lead 8-7.
The visitors would take the lead back 9-8 on a Emma Cannon layup with 3:27 remaining in the first quarter. The Purple Raiders would capitalize on a few more buckets and take a 14-10 lead into the second quarter.
The Purple Raiders would stretch their lead to 11 early in the second quarter when Gretchen Koken would nail a three pointer with 6:15 left in the quarter. Heidelberg would not give in and would cut the deficit to six, at 27-21, on a
Cheyanne Bean jumper with 2:48 to play in the second. Mount Union would catch a hot hand to end the half with a 38-25 lead.
Out of the break, the Purple Raiders made the first three points as Cannon split a pair of free throws and a Sierra Schlosser jumper to make it 41-25 in favor of the visitors.
Sequoia Bradley would knock down a pair of free throws for Heidelberg cutting the deficit to 41-27.
This would help jump start the 'Berg offense a little and would lead to a Rogers shot from distance to make the score 43-34 with 4:33 left in the quarter. The home squad would only notch two more points and the visitors would take advantage, stretching their lead to 59-36 heading into the final stanza.
The Purple Raiders would put the game on ice in the fourth quarter as they outscored Heidelberg 21-10 which helped them secure the 80-46 victory.
For the second straight game,
Ashley Ballard picked up nine rebounds.
The Student Princes will be back home on Wednesday evening as they host non-conference Wooster. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
