Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Sharp-shooting Sweeney steals the show

BEXLEY -- Bolstered by a sensational 23-point performance from Lily Sweeney, the Heidelberg University women's basketball team picked up a 69-60 overtime win over Capital University.  Sweeney was a near-perfect 6-for-7 from beyond the arc, setting a career high.  The Comets extended the game with a bucket in the closing seconds of regulation, but the Student Princes prevailed by outsourcing the hosts in overtime, 12-3.

Heidelberg improved to 3-10 on the season, 2-4 in the OAC.  Capital moved to 3-11, 0-6.

In addition to Sweeney's output, Bailey Walter was an efficient 5-for-8 from the floor and snared seven rebounds.  Marissa Thomas also reached double figures with 14 points.

Ashley Ballard was scoreless, but tallied a career high 11 rebounds.

Sweeney set the tone early, drilling her first 3-pointer a mere 13 seconds into the game.  Her second trey put HU up six with 3:47 left in the opening period.  The Tricolor led 13-9 after one.

Heidelberg led by as many as eight in the second, but the Comets utilized a 12-3 run over a three minute stretch, taking a brief one-point lead.  A basket from Walter late in the period gave HU a modest 27-24 lead at half.

Though the Comets were able to take two separate one-point leads, Heidelberg reinflated their cushion to as many as eight in the third. Tied at 35 with under five minutes in the third, Sarah Shoots ignited an 11-3  run with five straight points.

Down 47-44 to start the fourth, Capital tied the game on the first CAP possession  with a 3-pointer by Maddi Weiland.

Knotted at 53 with less than two to play, Hallie Rogers stepped into a 3-pointer and put The Berg on top.  After a Capital basket, Elisha Carter sank a free throw that gave HU a two-point lead with 25 seconds remaining.  After a timeout, Capital found Brooke Ommert in the paint for the game-tying shot.

Sweeney hit her final triple midway through overtime, a basket that was followed by a three-point play from Thomas.  Up six and feeling good, Walter hit a layup on the next possession.  From there, HU was able to coast to victory.

Thanks to 26 Capital miscues, Heidelberg enjoyed a 22-11 edge in points off of turnovers.

With the win, the Student Princes officially move to 2-4 in the OAC.  On Tuesday, OAC presidents unanimously voted to revamp the league's COVID protocols for missed games.  Retroactive to the start of the season, any league contest that is unable to be played because one or both schools are in COVID protocols will be a no-contest. Original rules saddled the COVID team with a loss.  As such, the Heidelberg/John Carroll game scheduled for Jan. 5 is no longer considered a 'Berg loss

The Student Princes return to action on Saturday.  They travel to Marietta to face the No. 22 Pioneers.  Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. .
