TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader with No. 6 Marietta College. Behind an incredible start by
Ross Thompson, HU opened with a 3-0 victory. The nightcap extended into extra innings, with the Pioneers winning 10-7.
Heidelberg moved to 19-13-1 overall, 16-12-1 in the OAC.
Sunday's games have been postponed indefinitely due to weather.
GAME ONE: BERG 3 MAR 0
Starter
Ross Thompson (3-2) dazzled, throwing eight shutout innings. He held the vaunted Pioneer offense to three hits while striking out six.
In the bottom of the eighth, Heidelberg found their rhythm against reliever Sam Matthews -- a right-hander who entered with a 5-1 record, five saves, and a 0.86 ERA.
Zach Doran stroked a single to center and moved to second on a bouncer through the left side by
Cayden Rollins.
Keaton Mark put HU on the board with a seeing-eye single up the middle that plated Doran.
Marc Ochoa was intentionally walked, which loaded the bases for
Eric DeVore. DeVore delivered a sacrifice fly right. With two down,
Deaunte Fleming delivered another run with a bouncer through the left side.
Cameron Deemer entered in the ninth and picked up his fourth save of the season. After a walk and a double put runners on second and third with nobody out, Deemer struck out the next three Pioneers.
The shutout was Heidelberg's first over Marietta since Brian Koehl fired a five-hit, complete game shutout in the championship game of the 2010 OAC Tournament at Peaceful Valley.
GAME TWO: MAR 10 BERG 7 (11 innings)
Marietta took a 2-0 lead in the second on the nightcap, then tacked on two more in the fourth.
In the fourth, Ochoa and DeVore hit one out singles to start a rally. Fleming followed with a single back up the middle that drove in Ochoa. Next,
Tyler Smith doubled to left center, scoring DeVore.
Trailing 4-2 in the fifth, HU erupted for five. Doran and Rollins singled, then Mark drew a walk to load the bases. With one out, DeVore launched his second home run of the season -- a grand slam to left. One batter later, Smith absolutely hammered a solo shot to right for his second homer of the season.
The Pioneers got a run back in the sixth, but still trailed 7-5. They would tie the game in the seventh with a pair of runs.
The game remained tied into the 11th inning. In the top half of the frame, Marietta strung together five straight hits, including four doubles. In all, Marietta plated three to take a 10-7 lead. Heidelberg went 1-2-3 in the bottom.
