MARIETTA -- The Heidelberg University baseball team dropped a pair of games at Marietta College on Tuesday. The Student Princes also fell in the series 3-1.
Heidelberg fell to 19-15-1 (16-14-1 OAC) while the Pioneers improved to 28-4 (26-3). Marietta currently leads the OAC standings.
Cameron Deemer and
Cayden Rollins received the losses on the mound.
The Student Princes hit three homers in the twinbill but struggled to consistently put runners on base.
GAME ONE: BERG 6 MARIETTA 7
Heidelberg took an early lead in the first inning of the day after a two-run homer by
Marc Ochoa.
Trailing 2-0, the Pioneers scored in the bottom of the third on a double down the right field line. After walking the next batter, Heidelberg escaped the inning with two runners still on base.
Marietta loaded the bases in the fourth inning but a strikeout by
Jake Hall got the Student Princes out of the inning with no runs scored.
In the next inning,
Stephen Currie struck a home run to give The Berg a 3-1 lead in the game.
Heidelberg grew its lead again in the sixth inning after a sacrifice fly from
Eric DeVore brought
Cayden Rollins home.
Marietta struck back in the bottom of the sixth with a sac fly to center field, bringing the score to 4-2.
With the bases loaded in the seventh,
Keaton Mark stepped to the plate and delivered a two-RBI single to center field.
Trailing 6-2 in the eighth, Marietta began a comeback march. With runners on second and third bases, Damian Yenzi hit a single to center field, bringing both runners home.
Heidelberg still held a 6-4 lead but was unable to add any runs in the ninth. The Pioneers had two runners on base before a double down the right field line brought them both in to even the score in the bottom of the ninth. A bases-loaded single to the outfield gave Marietta a walk-off win in game one.
GAME TWO: BERG 2 MARIETTA 12 (SEVEN INNINGS)
Marietta scored eight runs in the first inning of game two, bolstered by a grand slam.
In the second, Deautne Fleming brought Ochoa home for a Berg score to make the score 8-1.
Heidelberg scored again in the third inning from a
Robert Hunt home run.
The Pioneers added three more scores after a home run in the bottom of the third.
Marietta scored again in the seventh to win the game by run-rule.
Heidelberg will conclude regular-season play with a series against Wilmington College next Friday and Saturday. The Student Princes will host a doubleheader on Friday and travel to Wilmington on Saturday.
