GAME ONE: BERG 14 OTT 10
Down 3-0 and hitless through three, Heidelberg broke through in the bottom of the fourth.
Marc Ochoa hit a solo home run to the right of the scoreboard in right center field. Next,
Eric DeVore singled to right center. After advancing on a ground out, he scored on a slow-rolling single up the middle by
Tyler Smith.
Down 4-2 in the fifth, HU scored three unearned runs to take a brief lead.
Aidan Corrigan led off with a pinch-hit single, then
Zach Doran reached on an error. After
Cayden Rollins beat out what could have been a double play ball, pinch runner
Johnny Medvec scored on a fielder's choice by
Keaton Mark. With Ochoa batting, Mark appeared to be picked off of second, but got back to the bag after a brief rundown. A few pitches later, Ochoa launched a home run OVER the scoreboard.
Undeterred, the Cardinals scored three runs in the sixth.
Down 7-5, Heidelberg responded right away. Reliever Andy Caddas walked the first two hitters of the inning,
Deaunte Fleming and
Tyler Smith.
Kyle Jenkins drove in Fleming by bouncing a double over the head of the third baseman and down the line. With the bases loaded, Rollins served a single into right field, plating Smith. Jenkins scored on a sacrifice fly by Mark.
However, the Cardinals tied the game in the top of the seventh. The visitors stranded runners on second and third when
Zane Mirgon got a strikeout to end the inning.
The give-and-take continued in the bottom of the seventh. Fleming hit a one-out double down the right field line and moved to third on a base hit by Smith.
Stephen Currie broke the tie with a two-out double to the warning track in right, scoring Fleming.
Currie made a leaping grab at the wall in left to end the top of the eighth.
In the bottom of the inning, the Student Princes broke the game open with five runs. With runners on first and second and two outs, Fleming sent a hard hit ball to third that took a wicked hop into left field, scoring Mark. After a walk to Smith, Jenkins ripped a two-run single to left. Currie followed with a two-run single into center.
Mirgon (2-1) picked up the win, 2+ innings, allowing two runs on three hits.
Mason Metz entered with two on and two outs in the ninth and induced a fly ball to end the game. It was his first save of the season.
GAME TWO: BERG 6 OTT 4
Heidelberg got off to a fast start in the nightcap. Doran led off with a double to right and trotted home on a triple by Rollins.
