UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University baseball team split with host John Carroll on Saturday. HU won the opener 11-5, then lost in the nightcap, 12-6.
Heidelberg moved to 16-12-1 overall. In conference play, the Student Princes are 13-11-1, and sit in a sizable logjam with other teams angling for one of six spots in this year's OAC tournament.
Deaunte Fleming and
Tyler Smith each had four hits on the day.
GAME ONE: BERG 11 JCU 5
Heidelberg took an early lead, scoring twice in the top of the first.
Zach Doran reached on an error and moved to second on a passed ball. He scored on an RBI single by
Marc Ochoa. The next batter,
Eric DeVore, ripped a two-out double to right center that plated Ochoa.
John Carroll scored once in the first, then tied it with a run in the third.
The Blue Streaks took the lead with a run in the fourth. They tried to add on another with a double steal, but Erik Daugent was thrown out at the plate.
The JCU lead was short-lived. After HU loaded the bases with three walks, DeVore doubled home two with two outs. He scored on an infield single by
Deaunte Fleming.
The hosts tied the game again with a two-run double in the sixth.
Heidelberg regained the lead for good in the eighth.
Stephen Currie and Doran singled and scored on a triple by
Cayden Rollins. Rollins scampered home on a sacrifice fly by
Keaton Mark. Ochoa reached on an error, then moved to third on a single by DeVore. Fleming drove in Ochoa with a sacrifice fly to left.
Rollins tacked on two more runs in the ninth, launching a home run to left center field.
John Hassler picked up the win in relief. He worked the final three innings, allowing one hit and one walk, and no runs.
Ross Thompson started, giving up five runs in six innings. He struck out seven.
GAME TWO: JCU 12 BERG 6
DeVore kicked off the scoring in game two with a sac fly to right that scored Doran. Fleming followed with a double to right center that drove in Mark.
Kyle Jenkins reached on an error, which allowed Fleming to cross the plate -- giving HU a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Heidelberg scored three more. Mark singled in Doran, who had reached on an error. Later,
Tyler Smith drove in two with a single to right.
JCU, however, scored four times in both the first and the fifth, and plated single runs in every inning in between. They added one in the seventh.
