WESTERVILLE -- Heidelberg University pitchers
Ross Thompson and
Cameron Deemer combined on a four-hit shutout of host Otterbein. The Student Princes emerged with a 2-0 victory in the first game of a three-game weekend set.
Heidelberg improved to 10-10-1 in the standings, 13-11-1 overall.
Thompson (2-2) went 7+ innings, allowing three hits and striking out five. Deemer went the final two innings -- picking off one and striking out five.
Heidelberg took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.
Kyle Jenkins drew a lead off walk, stole second and stole second. With two outs, he scored on a single up the middle by
Cayden Rollins.
Eric DeVore -- known for his speed -- provided an insurance run in the sixth. He legged out a two-out double, then tried to advance on a ball in the dirt. The throw to third bounced into left field, which allowed DeVore to score.
Thompson cruised through seven innings, but walked the first two batters in the eighth. Deemer entered and helped regain momentum by picking off the lead runner. He picked up his first save of the season.
Otterbein starter Collin Hoffman struck out 10 in a complete game loss.
Heidelberg mustered six hits -- including two doubles by DeVore and two singles by
Tyler Smith.
The shutout was HU's first over Otterbein since a 2-0 win in 2017 -- a game in which Deemer got the win and Hoffman took a loss.
Up next, HU hosts Otterbein on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Peaceful Valley.
