TIFFIN -- The difference between sweeping and being swept on a chilly Saturday at Frann's Field was about three plays. Unfortunately for the Heidelberg University softball team, all three plays went in the favor of the visitors, Muskingum University. The Fighting Muskies fought their way to a 2-1 win in the opener and a 3-1 win in the nightcap.
The Student Princes slipped to 10-14-1 overall, 9-13 in the conference standings. Muskingum, which entered the weekend in second place, improved to 17-9, 16-6.
GAME ONE: MUSK 2 BERG 1
Heidelberg's
Caitlin Dems and Muskingum's Hannah Smith impressed the Frann's Field crowd with an engaging pitchers duel.
Hitless through five, the Muskies broke through in the sixth. Francesca Stefano drew a lead off walk and moved to second on a great bunt single by Shaena Mayer. After a ground out advanced the runners, a hit-and-run coupled with a throwing error, allowed two runs to score.
Heidelberg finally got to Smith in the bottom of the frame.
Kat Brady reached on a bunt single and moved to second on a wild pitch. She scored on a single through the right side by
Shelby Miller. Smith retired the next hitter and worked a 1-2-3 seventh to secure the win.
GAME TWO: MUSK 3 BERG 1 (8 innings)
Much like the first game, the nightcap featured an entertaining pitcher's duel between Heidelberg's
Riley Cruse and Muskingum's Hannah Duff.
Scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, Heidelberg got on the board. Cruse singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hailie Monhollen. After a bunt single by Brady moved her to third, Cruse scored on a sacrifice fly to center by
Leah Bouillon.
Down to their final out in the seventh, the Muskies scraped across a run. A single and a double plated the tying run.
Bailee Faulkner doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but Duff did not allow pinch runner
Alyssa Bennett to advance any farther -- and the game headed into extra innings.
Muskingum flexed their muscle in the top of the eighth, scoring twice.
Desperately seeking runs, Heidelberg had two on with two outs in the eighth, but once again, Duff was equal to the task.
