NEW CONCORD -- The Heidelberg University softball team was swept by Muskingum University on Sunday. The Muskies completed a 4-game sweep of the Student Princes this weekend with a 5-4 win in game one and a score of 8-0 in game two.
Heidelberg slipped to 10-16-1 overall, and 9-15 in conference competition. The Muskies improved to 19-9, 18-6.Â
GAME ONE: MUSK 5 Â BERG 4Â
Caitlin Dems recorded three strikeouts for the Student Princes in her complete game.Â
The Student Princes had 12 hits in the game.Â
Both teams recorded one hit in the first inning. The Muskies were in excellent position in the bottom of the second with the bases loaded, but Heidelberg escaped the inning with a throw from
Bailee Faulkner to
Brooke Lewis to get the runner out at home.Â
Muskingum got on the board in the third inning after a double to center field allowed a runner to score.Â
The Student Princes had runners on first and second with only one out in the top of the fifth inning, but a strikeout and groundout left the runners on base at the end of the frame.Â
Muskingum added a run in the bottom of the fifth after a double to right field brought a runner home.Â
Heidelberg's batting struggles came to an end in the seventh inning as the Student Princes earned five hits in the inning. Falkner began the inning with a home run for The Berg. Then with one out and two runners on base
Leah Bouillon hit a single to shortstop, batting in one run. With the bases loaded,
Shelby Miller stepped up and delivered a 2-RBI double to center field to give the Student Princes a 4-2 lead in the final inning.Â
Undeterred, the Muskies responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the win in game one. With the score tied and two outs, Rachel Hankin hit a single up the middle to give the home team the lead and sealed the win after seven innings.Â
GAME TWO: MUSK 8 Â BERG 0 (5 Innings)
Heidelberg recorded just three hits in the second game.
Riley Cruse earned a loss on the mound and
Jessica Voitko handled pitching duties for four innings.Â
Muskiungum opened strong in the final game of the weekend with four runs scored in the first inning.Â
The Muskies added three more runs in the fourth inning, including two unearned runs.Â
An unearned run in the fifth inning ended the game for the Student Princes.Â

Heidelberg will have a four-game weekend series with Otterbein University, beginning with a home doubleheader on Saturday.Â
