ADA, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University softball team dropped both halves of a Sunday morning doubleheader at Ohio Northern University. The Polar Bears narrowly won the opener, then won in a five-inning run-rule nightcap, 10-0.
Heidelberg slipped to 10-12-1 overall, 9-11 in the conference standings.
Hannah Blasinsky and
Brooke Lewis were the only two Student Princes with multiple hits on the day, with two apiece.
In the opener, Lewis led off the second with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Raye Hammond. An inning later,
Kat Brady tripled up the middle and scored on a base hit by
Shelby Miller.
Down 2-0, ONU plated three in the bottom of the third, taking the lead.
Heidelberg retook the lead, scoring twice on a wild pitch and a throwing error.
Undaunted, ONU used two two-out singles to score twice in the home half of the fourth and led 5-4. They tacked on an insurance run in the fifth and won 6-4.
The second game, which ended minutes before it started raining, began at 11:11 -- and clearly, whatever ONU players wished for trumped the wishes of 'Berg players. ONU scored 10 runs on 13 hits, while holding HU to no runs on two hits.
Heidelberg hosts Muskingum on Saturday for a doubleheader.
