BEREA, Ohio -- A
Kyle Jenkins grand slam helped the Heidelberg University baseball to another split with Baldwin Wallace University. HU won the opener, 10-7, then fell in the nightcap, 9-2 in a game shortened by darkness.
Heidelberg moved to 6-6 on the season, 3-5 in OAC action.
Zane Mirgon collected a team-high four hits and drove in four runs on the wind-swept afternoon.
Offensively, Heidelberg struck out 23 times and drew 16 walks in the twinbill.
GAME ONE: BERG 10 BW 7
Zach Doran scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning, giving HU an early lead.
The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the third with a two-run homer by Alexis Castillo.
BW's lead didn't last long. A single and two walks loaded the bases for Jenkins, who unleashed a grand slam to right center.
Camden Farley homered in the fifth, giving The Berg a 6-2 lead.
Down four, BW tied the game with two in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Heidelberg scored twice in the seventh, both unearned.
Zane Mirgon delivered a two-out single that plated one of the runs.
Mirgon provided some insurance with a two-run homer to left center in the top of the ninth.
Castillo homered again in the bottom of the ninth, but the solo shot did little to change the outcome of the game.
Cameron Deemer (1-1) got the win in relief, striking out three in four innings of work. Starter
Ryan Hackworth fanned five in five full innings.
GAME TWO: BW 9 BERG 2 (6 innings, darkness)
In the top of the third,
Keaton Mark singled and moved to second on a walk by
Tyler Smith. Mirgon delivered a two-out single that scored Mark, putting HU on the board first.
Heidelberg added another run in the fourth on a double play.
From there, though, it was all BW. The Yellow Jackets took the lead with three in the fifth, then scored six more in the sixth before the Berea daylight faded away.
