TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University baseball team swept Capital University in a Friday-afternoon doubleheader.
The Student Princes improved to 8-6 in the 2021 season while Capital dropped to 2-11.
GAME ONE: BERG 10 CAPITAL 0 (Seven Innings)
Ross Thompson pitched a complete game and picked up his first pitching win of the 2021 season.
Heidelberg scored in the second inning off a single to the left side. A
Zach Doran double plated two more runs for the Student Princes.
Kyle Jenkins followed up with a single, scoring another run in the inning for The 'Berg.
Heidelberg added two more scores in the third inning.
Doran struck a single up the middle of the field to bring in another run for Heidelberg in the fifth inning, Then two runs scored from a single to center field by
Keaton Mark. Mark scored the final run of the game after a
Zane Mirgon double down the left field line.
Doran scored three hits and batted in two runners. The Student Princes recorded 18 hits in the game.
Thompson allowed five hits and had eight strikeouts in the contest.
GAME TWO: BERG 15 CAPITAL 14
The Crusaders were on the scoreboard first with a single bringing a run in in the third inning. Then CJ Rockwell stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and delivered a home run to put the visitors up 5-0.
The Student Princes responded with a massive nine-run third inning starting with a dropped fly ball off the bat of Jenkins. A double down the right field line from Mark scored another run on the next play and Jenkins took advantage of a passed ball to score.
Marc Ochoa batted in another run with a single to center field.
Tyler Smith tripled to the right field line to plate two more runs and Smith reached home on a sacrifice fly from
Zane Mirgon. With Jenkins up to bat again,
Sam Runyan scored on a passed ball opportunity. Heidelberg led 9-5 after three innings.
Both teams scored a run in the fourth inning, and Heidelberg plated one in the fifth from a ground ball to the shortstop by Mark.
Capital tied the game in the eighth inning with another grand slam from Rockwell and gained the lead on a single to the left side.
This forced a rally from The 'Berg in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win. With two runners on base,
Reece McNeely singled to right field, bringing in a run. Runyan singled to the same area on the next play to plate another Student Princes run. McNeely scored the winning run on a wild pitch. Heidelberg left two runners on base, but was leading by two going into the final inning.
Capital scored a run in the top of the ninth from a sacrifice fly ball, but
Cameron Deemer struck out Rockwell to end the game.
Heidelberg scored 15 hits and had 11 RBIs in the second game of the afternoon.
Deemer was credited with his second win of the season with two strikeouts.

Heidelberg will look to repeat the sweep with a second set of games at Capital on Saturday. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
