MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University women's soccer team finished competition on Sunday with its second draw of the 2020-21 season. The Student Princes were locked with the Pioneers after 110 minutes of play in Marietta. Heidelberg led the match 2-0 early but late goals for Marietta evened the score.
Heidelberg moves to 0-1-2 while the Pioneers are now
Audrey Kaufman struck first for the Student Princes in the 22th minute. Kaufman dribbled down the left side of the field on a breakaway. Reaching the Marietta penalty area, she was confronted by three Pioneers defenders. Kaufman made two quick cuts before taking a right-footed shot into the back of the net.
Heidelberg scored again in the 50th minute from freshman
Madi Lause. The midfielder took a long shot from the left side of the field. She caught the Pioneer's goalkeeper off guard as the shot sailed over her hands.
Marietta scored from a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. The Pioneers struck again in the 86th minute after a free kick from midfield resulted in a loose ball in the Heidelberg defensive zone. After a missed shot, Emma Diorio got her head on the ball for a game-tying goal.
The Student Princes had four shots in overtime play but could not secure the victory.
Lause led The 'Berg in opportunities with 10 shots.
Meredith Bruce recorded six saves for HU in the draw.
The Student Princes are on the road again on Thursday for a 7 p.m. contest at Baldwin Wallace University.
