Student Princes earn a split on day two

MINNEOLA, Florida -- The Heidelberg University softball team worked another split on day two of their Florida Spring Break trip. In game one, HU fell to Case Western Reserve (Ohio) by a final score of 9-2, but responded in game two with a 5-3 win over Beloit (Wisconsin).

With the split, Heidelberg now stands at 2-2 on the year.

Kennedy Conney led the team with three hits combined on the day. Conney also added an RBI in game two. Casey Moore collected two hits, scored a run, walked twice, and tallied one RBI. Kaitlyn Moore hit the team's first home run of the season with a solo shot to center field in game one.

CASE WESTERN RESERVE - 9   HEIDELBERG - 2
The Student Princes found themselves behind 7-0 heading into the fourth run after Case jumped on 'Berg starter Kaitlyn Moore for seven runs -- four of which were earned. Rylee Tomsic entered with runners on second and third and forced a groundout to end the inning.

In the fourth inning, Kaitlyn Moore found some redemption at the plate as she led off the inning with a towering home run that bounced off the top of the 10-foot fence in center field. Leah Bouillon followed Moore's homer with a double to the left center gap and moved to third on a ground out from Kat Brady. On third, Bouillon trotted home on Bailee Faulkner's two-out single up the middle.

In the fifth, Tomsic surrendered two runs. From there, the debutant kept Case from scoring as the game finished in favor of the Spartans 9-2.

Kaitlyn Moore (1-1) was hit with the loss after pitching 2.2 innings for six hits and seven runs (four earned). In relief, Tomsic tossed 3.1 innings and only conceded four hits and two earned runs.

HEIDELBERG - 5   BELOIT - 3
The Student Princes played from behind as they fell behind in the top of the first inning. Dani Strejc reached first on a throw error, which also allowed Makayla Zundel -- who had previously walked -- race home for the 1-0 lead.

IN the bottom half of the inning, HU answered back. Halie Monhollen led off with a double off the fence in center and moved to third on a wild pitch. Brooke Lewis and Casey Moore then drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Then, Bethany Redman singled up the middle to drive home a run. Starting pitcher, Stephanie Drapp helped her own cause as she singled through the left side and drove home Casey Moore

The Student Princes then got single runs in the bottom of the third, fifth and sixth innings, which eventually proved to be much-needed.

In the third, Kennedy Conney singled up the middle to drive home pinch runner Meghan Bame from third.

In the fifth, Bethany Redman walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. From there, pinch runner Grace Freeman was able to sprint home from second on an error from Beloit shortstop Steph Lopez.

During the sixth, Casey Moore drove home the final insurance run of the game. Monhollen and Lewis drew back-to-back walks and both advanced via a wild pitch. Moore then singled into left field to drive home Monhollen.

Beloit added another run in the top half of the seventh on back-to-back doubles, but Drapp closed the door with a game-ending foul out.

In all, Drapp (1-1) hurled all seven innings and surrendered just five hits, three runs (two earned), and struck out five.

Cora Aubert (0-3) pitched the distance for Beloit and allowed five runs (three earned) and walked eight. Aubert did strikeout five 'Berg batters.
