Game Recap: Softball |

Pitchers dominate and Drapp still ain't tired

CLERMONT, Florida -- On day three of the Heidelberg University softball spring trip, pitchers Stephanie Drapp and Kaitlyn Moore took control of the team's first sweep of the season moving them to a 4-2 record on the season.

In game one, Drapp led HU to a 6-5 extra-inning walk off win over Case Western Reserve, while Moore nearly threw a no-hitter in a mercy rule 8-0 win over DeSales in game two. Both pitchers were also crucial catalysts to the offensive side of the game.

In total, Hanna Blasinsky led the team with four hits on the day, while Kaitlyn Moore and Stephanie Drapp each added three hits. Brooke Lewis and Shelby Miller each had two hits, while Lewis and Riley Cruse each had two RBIs.

HEIDELBERG - 6  CASE WESTERN RESERVE - 5 (10 INNINGS)
In game one, the Student Princes earned sweet revenge over the Spartans from Case Western Reserve after falling the day before by a final score of 9-2. On Tuesday afternoon, HU outlasted Case and knocked off the in-region opponent by a final of 6-5 in 10 innings.

Heidelberg starting pitcher Stephanie Drapp (2-1) pitched all 10 innings and collected the walk off RBI single in the bottom half of the 10th.

The Berg got out to an early head start in the bottom half of the first as Brooke Lewis smack an RBI double to left field. Pinch runner Raye Hammond sprinted home from first to put HU on top 1-0.

Case answered back with a run in the top of the second and another in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead.

Again, Lewis stepped to the plate with runners on. Hanna Blasinsky led off the inning with a double to left and Shelby Miller was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. Lewis then hit a line drive to left center that scored Blasinsky from second.

Tied at two heading to the seventh inning, Case looked to send the game home as Nicole Carty belted a towering two-run home run to left center. After the homer, Drapp settled down and got out of the inning without further damage.

In the bottom half of the inning, HU rallied. Blasinsky reached on an error, Miller singled, and Casey Moore singled to load the bases. Pinch hitter Bethany Redman then drew a walk to allow Blasinsky to trot home. Kaitlyn Moore then lofted a sacrifice fly to center that enabled pinch runner Halie Monhollen to sprint home and narrowly beat the tag.

Tied at four, the game entered extras where both teams plated a run in the eighth inning. Kat Brady's triple down the left field line enabled lead runner, Drapp to come home from third.

After a scoreless ninth, 'Berg held Case scoreless in the top of the 10th. In the bottom half of the inning, Kaitlyn Moore advanced lead runner Kennedy Conney to third and put runners on the corners. Then Drapp stepped to the plate and singled through the right side to plate Conney for the walk off win.

Drapp's final statline in the pitching circle read 10 innings pitched, 11 hits allowed, five runs (four earned), two walks and two hit by pitches. Of the 42 batters faced, Drapp induced 13 flyouts and 13 groundouts to retire the Spartans when needed most.

Reliever Sidney Brannam (1-2) was hit with the loss in her two innings of work. Brannam surrendered four hits and two unearned runs.

HEIDELBERG - 8   DESALES - 0 (SIX INNINGS)
The Student Princes played from in front after grabbing a pair of runs in the top half of the first. Blasinsky drew a lead off walk and stole second. Casey Moore then singled her home with a drive to left. After Casey advanced to second on the throw, Kaitlyn Moore singled to right center and drove her sister home, giving HU an early 2-0 lead.

From there, Kaitlyn Moore -- 'Berg's starting pitcher -- garnered control of the game. In the second inning, Moore conceded an opening walk and then struck out the side. Again in the third, Moore worked around a walk and then induced two ground outs to stay on course.

In the fourth inning, Heidelberg added three more runs to go ahead 5-0. Kaitlyn Moore continued to help her own cause by leading off the inning with a single to left. She then advanced around to third before being singled home by Leah Bouillon. Kat Brady followed Bouillon with an infield single that put runners on the corners. Brady and Bouillon then pulled off a double steal as Bouillon slid in safe at home. Brady then scored from second on Hanna Blasinsky's single to left.

Moore then cruised through the bottom of the fourth 1-2-3.

HU added another pair of runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead even further to 7-0. Kaitlyn Moore then got on base via a fielder's choice and moved to second on Kennedy Conney's single to left. Moore and Conney then double stole second and third before coming home on pinch hitter Riley Cruse's first career hit.

Moore kept her no-hitter bid going through the bottom of the fifth as she avoided a lead off walk with a strikeout and two popouts.

In the top half of the sixth, HU got the elusive eighth run on Bethany Redman's RBI single down the right field. Kat Brady walked to start the inning and then moved to second and scored on Redman's line drive.

Heading to the bottom of the sixth, Kaitlyn Moore looked to finish off her no-no bid. Unfortunately, Erin Redden's lead off single through the left side evaporated those hopes. The hit proved to be no damage as the defense stepped up with two tough-played fielder's choices. The game ended on a pickoff at second base. Bailee Faulkner gunned the ball to Bouillon for the tag to cap off the game.

In all, Moore (2-1) surrendered just one hit in her six innings of work. Moore also walked four but struck out five in her efforts. In all, she pitched just 82 pitches.

Julia Testagrose (1-3)  was credited with the loss as she lasted four innings and surrendered seven hits and five earned runs.

INSIDE THE BOX:
The twinbill sweep was the Student Princes' first since April 7, 2019 when the team swept Bethany College at home.

Heidelberg combined for 24 hits across the two games, their most in a two game set since they collected 32 in a doubleheader sweep of Capital on April 2, 2019.

The Student Princes have seen a balanced offense so far at the start of the season as nine batters have collected four or more hits so far this year. Hanna Blasinsky and Casey Moore lead the team with six hits each.

After taking two wins on day three of their annual spring break trip, Stephanie Drapp still ain't tired.

UP NEXT:
The Student Princes will take their off day on Wednesday before being back in action at Minneola Athletic Complex on Thursday. Heidelberg will play Wisconsin Lutheran at 9:15 a.m. and Carnegie Mellon at 11:30 a.m.
