MINNEOLA, Florida -- It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
Moments after putting the finishing touches on a second consecutive two-game sweep, the members of the Heidelberg University softball team learned that their season -- like so many across the country -- was coming to a premature end because of COVID-19 precautions. Visit
Heidelberg Athletics' release for more information.
In the two wins,
Bethany Redman and
Casey Moore led the Student Princes offensively. Redman totaled four hits, two RBIs, two walks and a run scored, while Moore had four hits, three RBIs and a run scored.
Additionally,
Leah Bouillon and
Shelby Miller totaled two hits a piece on the day.
HEIDELBERG - 3 WISCONSIN LUTHERAN - 2
The Student Princes started the game early, finding a way to get on base, but struggled to plate a run until the top of the fifth inning.
In the meantime, the Warriors scored one in each of the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, HU got on the board.
Hanna Blasinsky walked to lead off the inning and moved around to third after stealing second and advanced on
Bethany Redman's single to right. With runners on the corners,
Casey Moore smacked an RBI single up the middle that allowed Blasinsky to trot home.
After a scoreless sixth, Heidelberg was down to their last three outs in the seventh. The inning began with runners on as
Shelby Miller drew a walk and Redman moved pinch runner
Delaney Gill to second with a sacrifice bunt. With Gill in scoring position,
Casey Moore stepped again, drilling a double off the fence in straight away center field, scoring Gill.
Kaitlyn Moore followed in her sister's footsteps and smacked her own double off the fence to score her sister, for what would prove to be the game-winning run.
Kaitlyn Moore (3-1) worked around a single to right in the bottom half of the inning and retired the side to move Heidelberg to their fourth win in a row. Across her seven innings of pitching, Moore surrendered six hits, two runs (one earned) and struck out four.
HEIDELBERG - 7 CARNEGIE MELLON - 2
In the top of the first, the 'Berg defense got off to a slow start as the team surrendered two unearned runs behind game two starter
Stephanie Drapp.
In the bottom of the first, though, the offenses responded.
Bethany Redman drew a walk and then scored on
Casey Moore's triple to right field to get HU on the board.
Back on the mound, Drapp settled down and shut out the Tartans the remainder of the game.
The bats picked up even further in the bottom of the fifth as HU flipped the script with three runs after showing patience at the plate and running the bases smartly.
Kat Brady,
Hanna Blasinsky and Redman loaded the bases with a hit-by-pitch and two walks. After
Raye Hammond was injected as pinch runner on first, the bases featured three speedy runners, which paid immediate dividends. All three runners advanced on a wild pitch, leading to the tying run. Then, two batters later,
Brooke Lewis blooped a single to the dead space behind second base that enabled Hammond and Blasinsky to score.
The next inning, Heidelberg added another three runs to all but seal the win.
Kennedy Conney started the inning with an infield single before advancing via a sac bunt from
Leah Bouillon. Blasinsky then walked again.
Shelby Miller then drove home Conney from second with a single to left center. Blasinsky and Miller both moved ahead on the base paths on the throw. Redman then came through again as she slapped a single to left center that plated both Blasinsky and pinch runner
Delaney Gill.
In the top of the seventh, Drapp induced three straight groundouts to end the game, giving HU the 7-2 victory.
Drapp (3-1) threw all seven innings and only conceded six hits, two unearned runs and struck out one.
Amanda Schwartz was hit with the loss making her 0-2 on the year. Schwartz was responsible for four innings pitched, two hits, three earned runs, two walks, three hits batsmen, and a strikeout.
INSIDE THE BOX:
The Student Princes are currently in the midst of a five game winning streak -- their longest since the 2018 season when they won seven in row from March 28th to April 7th of that year.
The 6-2 start is the best eight game start to the season for the program since the 2018 season when they also started 6-2 that season.
After today's twinbill, eight HU batters have collected at least five hits on the season -- all of whom are hitting above .270.
After the team has now played eight games, it is confirmed that
Stephanie Drapp is still not tired.
