MINNEOLA, Florida -- On opening day, the Heidelberg University softball team walked away with a 1-1 record after beating Penn State Behrend in game one by a final score of 5-3 and falling to Mt. St. Joseph by a 9-1 scoreline.
Casey Moore,
Bethany Redman,
Delaney Gill, and
Brooke Lewis all collected two hits on the day.
Kennedy Conney paced the team in RBIs with four combined over the two contests.
HEIDELBERG - 5 PENN STATE BEHREND - 3
In the top of the first inning, freshman
Hanna Blasinsky drew a walk and then stole second. Blasinsky then scored on a 2-out double off the left field fence from
Casey Moore.
Behrend got two runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning on three hits off of starter
Kaitlyn Moore.
The Lions added an insurance run in the fourth inning with a solo home run to right center from Mackenzie McIntire.
Trailing by two heading into the fifth, the Student Princes rallied.
Bethany Redman singled and then pinch runner
Halie Monhollen moved to second on a wild pitch.
Casey Moore then walked to put two on. Three batters later, freshman
Delaney Gill beat out an infield single that plated Monhollen. With runners on the corner,
Kennedy Conney cleared the bases with a double off the fence in left center, putting the Berg back on top 4-3.
In the top of the seventh, Heidelberg tacked on an insuring fifth run. With
Bailee Faulkner and Gill on base, Conney lofted a fly ball to right center that enabled Faulkner to sprint home.
Looking to close out the game,
Kaitlyn Moore worked around a one-out double and sealed the game. Moore (1-0) worked seven innings of work and surrendered eight hits and three earned runs, but also managed to strikeout four Lions.
Abi Michelucci worked 0.2 innings of relief and was saddled with the loss, putting her 0-1 on the year. Michelucci surrendered three hits, a walk and two earned runs.
MT. ST. JOSEPH - 9 HEIDELBERG - 1 (SIX INNINGS)
Mt. St. Joseph jumped on 'Berg game two starter,
Stephanie Drapp in the first inning, getting three runs, two of which were unearned.
The Lions added two more in the second, including both as unearned. In the bottom half of the inning,
Kennedy Conney picked up her fourth RBI of the day as her sacrifice fly to center scored
Brooke Lewis from third. Lewis had previously doubled to lead off the inning.
MSJ added a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth off of 'Berg reliever
Maggie Hoffman -- who made her debut in the circle.
Drapp (0-1) was credited with the loss after tossing just 1.2 innings for five hits, five runs (four unearned). Drapp did strikeout two. Hoffman hurled 4.1 innings and allowed seven hits and four runs.
Sarah Miller (2-3) went the distance for MSJ, allowing five hits and just the one earned run.

The win over Penn State Behrend was the first in the career of head coach
Mari Deppe.
Kaitlyn Moore distanced herself at the top of the career strikeout leaderboard with four more today. Her career total stands at 305 Ks.

The Student Princes will be back in action tomorrow with a twinbill. At 9 a.m. The Berg will play Case Western Reserve on field S1 at Minneola Athletic Complex and will follow with an 11:30 a.m. first pitch vs. Beloit on field S2.
LOOKING AHEAD:
Heidelberg's originally schedule 4 p.m. game on Tuesday (3/10) vs. Kean was canceled and has now been replaced with a location change. The Student Princes Tuesday schedule is now a 1:45 p.m. game vs. Case Western Reserve and a 6:15 p.m. contest vs. DeSales. Both games will now be played at Legends Way Field 2.
