TIFFIN -- Battling the elements and the opposition, the Heidelberg University men's lacrosse team lost to Calvin University, 10-7, on a snowy Wednesday evening. The Knights used a second-half surge to pull away from the Student Princes.
Heidelberg dropped to 1-1 on the season while Calvin improved to 2-0.
Alex Bruder and
David Weaver each scored a pair of goals in the loss.
Down 1-0,
Patrick McCarthy tied the game with 3:30 left in the first with his fifth goal of the season. Calvin answered a minute later with a goal by Nathan Jindra.
In the closing seconds of the first quarter,
Alex Bruder used a feed from McCarthy to tie the game at 2-2. Early in the second, nifty ball movement led to a goal by
Jacob Brickman that put HU on top, 3-2.
The Knights would score the next two goals to regain the lead with 9:44 left in the half. The score remained 4-3 for more than seven minutes as both teams attempted to find their footing on the snow-covered turf at Hoernemann Stadium. With 2:09 to play,
David Weaver found the equalizer, assisted by Bruder.
Both sides had good looks at go-ahead goals late in the half, but the score remained 4-4 at the break.
Charging from behind the net, Bruder tallied his second early in the third quarter finding the top right corner of the net.
The lead was short-lived as the Knights capitalized on a failed clear attempt by Heidelberg. Calvin won the ensuing faceoff and took the lead on a goal by Noah Boelens. The visitors added another and led 7-5 after three quarters.
Calvin took control of the game with the first three goals of the final period, taking a 10-5 lead.
The Berg managed to find the back of the net twice in the final 26 seconds, with goals by
Hunter Edwards and Weaver.
Quincy Grevious made 10 saves on 20 shots for Heidelberg.
Calvin was led by a four-goal effort by Chase Sparling.
Heidelberg will wrap up their season-opening homestand on Saturday as start-up NCAC program Allegheny College will travel to Hoernemann Stadium for a 1 p.m. faceoff.
