Berg draws Transylvania in goal fest

TIFFIN, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University women's soccer team was held to a high-scoring 4-4 draw at home on Saturday afternoon vs. Transylvania.

The Pioneers (1-4-1) used goals in the first minute and the last minute of the first half to disrupt the Student Princes (3-3-1) and force the tie.

Off the opening kickoff, Transylvania forced a turnover and Abby Baker capitalized and put her team ahead early.

It wasn't for another 30 minutes until either team would find the net as Erica Campbell grabbed her fourth goal of the season off a long ball from Lexi Langwasser. Campbell split the defense and her shot tipped the hands of the Transy goalkeeper before trickling into the net.

Just five minutes later, Baker grabbed her second of the match to reestablish the lead for the visitors. Much like the first goal, Baker's tally was assisted by Meron Roach.

The lead did not last long for Transy this time around as Kate Mundy got the Berg level just a minute and 28 seconds later with a long and deflected shot. Ainsley Tucker was credited with the assist. Also helping lead to the goal was Bekah Thomas who caused havoc in front of the Transy net making a save attempt challenging.

Roach got herself in on the first-half goal fest with a strike with just two seconds left on the clock. This time for the Pioneers, Baker was the provider to Roach. The score at the half ended 3-2 in favor of Heidelberg.

After the halftime break, the Student Princes came out looking to flip the tables back in their favor. Audrey Kaufman finished off a feed from Erica Campbell on the top of the six-yard box in the 48th to level the score at three.

In the midst of peppering the Transy goal, it wouldn't be until the 82nd minute when Heidelberg would take their first lead of the game at 4-3. Almost a carbon copy of her first goal, Kaufman took a feed from Campbell near the top of the goal area. This time, the initial shot was blocked, but Kaufman finished off the rebound for her team-leading fifth goal of the year.

Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived for the Student Princes as Emily Payne buried a quick free kick from about 30 yards from goal on an unsuspecting Berg defense in the 84th minute.

That would conclude the scoring, but not for a valiant effort by the Student Princes to find the winning goal through overtime. In the second period of OT, Lexi Foley found herself on the end of a goal-mount scramble that yielded two shots being blocked and a third saved off the line by the Pioneer goalkeeper. The final chance came at the foot of Victoria Perez, but her shot attempt as time expired sailed wide.

In goal for Heidelberg, Meredith Bruce was credited with three saves, while Morgan Patton stopped 11 shots for Transylvania.

The Tricolor attempted 33 shots at the Transy goal, but could only find the frame on 16 of those chances. The Pioneers mustered 13 total shots with seven of them being on goal.

The Student Princes will stay at home for their next game on Wednesday night as Bluffton University pays a visit to Tiffin, Ohio. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Hoernamann Stadium.
