Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lucky 7! Berg puts seven past Bluffton in rout

TIFFIN -- A year ago, the Heidelberg University women's soccer team faced Bluffton University and was held to a scoreless draw.  That was not the case on a clear Wednesday evening at Hoernemann Stadium.

The Student Princes scored early and often in a resounding 7-1 win over the Beavers.  Heidelberg moved over the .500 mark with the win (4-3-1) and are unbeaten in their last three matches.  Bluffton slipped to 3-6-1.

The seven goals were the most for the program since they upended Hiram College 8-1 in 1998.

Heidelberg was carried by a seven point performance from senior Erica Campbell who score twice and picked up three assists on the evening.

It took just eight minutes for Heidelberg to break open the game as an Campbell corner kick found the foot of McKenzie Perry who dispatched a shot to the lower left corner for the 1-0 lead.

In the 17th, the Berg would double their tally with a nicely worked goal by Amanda Nething. Audrey Kaufman found herself through on goal, but squared for an easy tap in at the six-yard box for Nething's second of the season.

Bekah Thomas was next to get her name on the scoresheet as she finished off a second chance opportunity off another corner kick. Campbell's initial service was cleared back to her, where she served a second ball into the box that was headed back across by Perry to Thomas. The sophomore got her first of the season as she beat Bluffton goalkeeper Sienna Sullivan to the ball.

Campbell then joined the scoring action with the fourth of the game finishing an unassisted strike off Sullivan's fingertips in the upper right corner.

Rounding out the first half festivities was Macy Zachary who flicked in a 1-on-1 that was set up by Sophie Huber. The goal was Zachary's first of her career.

Bluffton made a bright start to the second half scoring in the 51st minute. Tajah Upshaw was on the receiving end of a Maddie Huffman service.

However, just three minutes later, Campbell was fouled in the penalty area and converted the ensuing spot kick for Heidelberg's sixth and her second of the game.

Amanda Sugrue completed the scoring in the 62nd minute with a nicely placed shot to the upper left corner. Campbell picked up the assist on the goal.

In goal, starter Meredith Bruce stopped one shot, while substitute Hailey Taylor was credited with two saves.

As a team, the Student Princes outshot Bluffton 23-9, including 16 on frame. Campbell was credited with five shot attempts, while Zachary had four, all of which found the frame.

Heidelberg returns to action on Saturday.  They visit Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana.  Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
