Maddy Crawford's 28-point, 17-rebound performance was just not enough at the end of the day as the Heidelberg University women's basketball team was upended 99-65 at home against the Wilmington College Quakers.
With the loss, Heidelberg slipped to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the OAC. Wilmington improved to 4-2 and 1-0 in the conference.
Crawford's career-high 28 points came on 8-of-12 from the floor and a near perfect showing at the free throw line. At the stripe, she was 11-for-13. On the glass, Crawford hauled in a game-high 17 boards, which included six offensive rebounds. Rounding out her stellar performance, Crawford chipped in two blocks, two assists, and a steal.
Alli Adelsperger was the lone other Student Prince to reach double-digits in scoring with 13.
The first quarter featured a display of aggressive offense that resulted in a 22-22 score at the first intermission and both teams converting nine field goals. Wilmington was slightly more adventurous, taking seven 3-pointers in the quarter, but Heidelberg was more efficient converting 50% of their attempts from deep.
Brooke Beamer and Adelsperger led the team with six points each in the first 10 minutes.
In the period, both teams also took care of the ball, only turning it over one time combined.
As the game carried on as a high-scoring affair in the second quarter, Heidelberg went cold after hitting for nine points on 3-of-4 shooting and three free throws had them within one with over seven minutes remaining in the frame.
Wilmington however, did not skip a beat finishing out the half on a 13-4 run. Heidelberg worked many second half chances but a dismal 2-of-11 allowed the Quakers to open up a 45-33 lead by the halftime break. The Berg was held scoreless for more than six minutes. The scoreless drought was bookended by layups from
Bailey Walter and Adelsperger.
After the intermission, the Quakers stayed on the front foot as grew their lead to as many as 24 in the quarter. In all, Wilmington outscored the Student Princes 27-17 in the frame. For HU, 14 of those 17 points were poured in by
Maddy Crawford as the senior awakened her offensive touch.
In the fourth, Crawford kept up her efforts as she was responsible for the team's first eight points of the quarter before assisting on
Amy Hafer's 3-pointer to put a stop to her personal run of nearly 22 straight Heidelberg points.
Crawford's late offensive surge was just not enough as the Quakers continued to convert their chances, once again scoring 27 points in the fourth quarter. At the end of the day, the Quakers took home a 99-65 win.
As a team, Wilmington converted 37-of-69 shots for 53% and added 14 points from the free throw line. Additionally, the Quakers held advantages in rebounds (40-36), steals (10-4), and had fewer turnovers (10-18).
The Quakers had four players reach double-figures in scoring -- McKayla Binkley (19), Kennedy Lewis (18), Hannah Binkley (14), and Kelly Noll (10). Noll also had a team-high seven boards and Zahrya Bailey dished out seven assists.
The Student Princes will stay home for their next two as they play non-conference opponent Olivet College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and OAC foe Otterbein University on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Heidelberg men will follow the women's Otterbein game with a 3 p.m. tip off in Seiberling Gymnasium.
