Four for #4 - Cam Vocke leads football to win

Box Score

OLIVET, Mich. -- Cameron Vocke scored four touchdowns as the Heidelberg University football team upended host Olivet College, 40-24, on a picturesque day in mid-Michigan.  Olivet, the reigning two-time MIAA champion held the momentum early, but a 20-point second quarter propelled the Student Princes to victory.

Heidelberg moves to 1-0 on the season, picking up their first opening win since 2014.

KEY STATS

Vocke had 15 carries for 87 yards, four receptions for 43 yards -- scoring four times.

QB Tyler Stoyle was 25-of-42 for 309 yards and three touchdowns.

WRs Demetrius Magee (9 for 136) and Tony Morris (5 for 74) each scored a touchdown.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Staking Olivet to an early 7-0 lead, Donaldson's team responded quickly with a 65-yard touchdown drive. The Student Princes were put in good field position with a 31-yard catch-and-run to Demetrius Magee. Facing 4th and 7 at the Olivet 30, Stoyle connected with a wide open Cameron Vocke in the end zone. The PAT attempt failed, but HU closed the gap to 7-6.

The one-point deficit was short lived, as Brandon Benac returned the kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown return, pushing the Olivet lead to 14-6 with 10:11 remaining in the first quarter.

The Student Prince defense forced Olivet to punt deep in their own end. After a high snap that rolled to the OC 5-yard line, the Olivet punter still got the punt off. A short punt gave the Berg great field position for their next drive, at the Comet 35.

HU took advantage of the field position, as the drive was capped with another Vocke touchdown. This time, the senior broke three tackles and muscled his way through the Olivet defense for a 22-yard run. Austin Baker completed the PAT to cut the Comet lead to 14-13 with 5:36 in the first quarter.

Aided by two key personal fouls by Heidelberg, the Comets drove the field and settled for a 20-yard Douglas Pollard field goal with 11:40 remaining in the 2nd quarter.

On the ensuing possession, Stoyle connected with Tony Morris on a 39-yd touchdown on 3rd down.  The drive was aided by an offsides call on Olivet on 4th-and-5 for HU.  Baker's PAT made it 20-17.

Right away, Jarett Wasson picked off a Porter pass and returned it to the Olivet 4.  Following a penalty, Vocke waltzed into the end zone from nine yards out -- his third score of the game.  Another bad snap on the PAT kept the score at 26-17.

Riding a surge of momentum, the defense forced a three-and-out.  Stoyle and company converted into seven more points.  On 3rd down, Demetrius Magee made a diving catch in the end zone from 20 yards.  HU led 33-17 at the end of the first half, capped by an Ahkil McGill interception in the end zone.

After Olivet opened the second half with a touchdown, the Student Princes ended the third with Vocke's fourth touchdown.  His third rushing touchdown, coming from a yard out, gave HU a 40-24 lead.

The Comets turned the ball over on downs three times in the fourth quarter, including twice in the red zone, as the Berg defense stood tall.
