Box Score TIFFIN -- Aianna Wilson scored a career-high 21 points, but the scrappy Heidelberg University women's basketball team fell short on Saturday, dropping their home opener to Wilmington College, 70-68.
Maddy Crawford and Brittanie Ulmer each dropped in 14 points. Crawford had a team-high seven rebounds.
Wilmington improves to 5-2, 2-1 in the conference, while the Berg falls to 3-5, 1-2.
The Quakers got out to a quick start, taking a 13-4 lead. After the opening quarter, Heidelberg trailed 22-10.
Down 32-22 with 4:15 left in the second, the gray-clad Student Princes motored their way to a game-tying 10-0 run. Wilson scored five points during the two-minute stretch. The Quakers would go into halftime up 36-32.
In the third quarter, Heidelberg built up a four-point lead before Wilmington took charge. With the game knotted at 45, the Quakers scored the next eight points and led 56-49 after three.
Playing at home for the first time this season, Heidelberg battled back. The Berg tied the game at 63 on a bucket by Alyssa Riley. Later, a scooping layup by Ulmer gave Heidelberg a 65-64 lead.
Wilmington answered with the next four. An Ulmer free throw and a Brooke Beamer jumper tied the contest at 68 with 1:03 to play.
With 5.2 remaining, Wilmington standout Mackenzie Campbell knifed through the defense and buried a 15-foot jumper.
Heidelberg got a good look at a potential game-winner, but Brooke Beamer's 3-pointer from the elbow rimmed out.
Head coach Morgan Harrigan on the play of Wilson: "She's a competitor and a leader for us, she definitely gave us an opportunity to win today."
Harrigan on moving forward: "We played hard … If we keep putting in the work it's going to start clicking … They're all out there playing for each other."
The Berg forced the Quakers to commit 22 turnovers. Crawford and Wilson had three steals each.
Typically a 36% 3-point shooting team, Heidelberg was a mere 2 of 20 from beyond the arc.
The Student Princes will power through final exams before resuming competition next Saturday. On Dec. 16, Heidelberg will host Mount Union at 3 p.m.
