Beamer's 21 not enough for WBB

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- A second half lull spelled doom for the Heidelberg University women's basketball team in a 75-53 loss at Wittenberg on Thursday afternoon. The Tigers used a 12-0 run that hammocked across the third and fourth quarters, handing the Student Princes their fifth straight loss.

The Berg moved to 3-8 overall, while the other 'Berg climbed back to .500 at 6-6.

Freshman Brooke Beamer set a career high with a 21-point outburst to lead all scorers. Alyssa Riley was the only other Student Prince in double figures, as she finished with 14 points.

Though Heidelberg was out-rebounded 45-33, Maddie Crawford worked for a game-high 11 boards.

Despite a 12-0 Witt spree in the first quarter, HU clawed back into the game by outscoring the Tigers in the second, 20-10.

The back-breaking burst for Wittenberg came after Crawford hit a three and a a layup on consecutive possession that prompted a timeout by the hosts. There, leading 49-43 with 3:33 to play, the Tigers scored 12 in a row before Beamer stepped into a 3-pointer with 7:53 left in the fourth.

The Student Princes will not compete again until the calendar rolls over to 2018. They visit John Carroll (2-7, 0-4) on Jan. 3 for a 7:30 p.m. tip with the Blue Streaks.
