Box Score UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- A week after everything clicked into place, the Heidelberg University football team struggled to find its rhythm in a 42-14 loss to John Carroll University on Saturday. The Student Princes were held to a mere 188 yards of offense in the loss.
Heidelberg dropped to 1-2 on the season, 1-1 in the OAC. John Carroll improved to 2-1 overall, 2-0 in the OAC.
KEY STATS
Heidelberg was just 3 of 16 on third down, offensively. JCU was 3 of 10.
Tyler Stoyle was 20-of-38 passing for 131 yards and two touchdowns. The junior signal-caller also threw an interception.
Demetrius Magee had six catches for 48 yards and two touchdowns.
FIRST QUARTER
On the game's opening drive, JCU's Sam Kukura broke off a 51-yard rush to set up his own two-yard touchdown plunge one play later. Matt Danko added the point after.
SECOND QUARTER
Kukura added his second touchdown with a seven-yard score early in the second.
With the Tricolor offense stagnant, JCU scored on its next possession. Anthony Moeglin connected with Marshall Howell for a 38-yard touchdown completion.
Teams traded punts for the rest of the quarter. Heidelberg was held to just 53 yards of total offense in the first half.
THIRD QUARTER
Kukura mangled a punt early in the third, recovered by Heidelberg's Jeremy Mahaffey. Gifted with the ball on the Blue Streak 25, Heidelberg pushed toward the end zone. On 4th-and-goal from the six, Stoyle and Demetrius Magee connected for a touchdown. AJ Morrison's point after made it 21-7.
The hosts regained momentum on the ensuing drive. Moeglin scampered 12 yards for a touchdown.
FOURTH QUARTER
Kukura punched it in from the one early in the fourth, his third score of the game. The score gave JCU a 35-7 edge.
Another turnover led to the second HU touchdown. Tanner Doenges stepped in front of off a Moeglin pass at the JCU 37 and returned it to the 12. On the next play, Magee caught his second touchdown of the game -- a well-thrown ball by Stoyle to the front pylon.
JCU running back Ro Golphin closed the scoring with a 92-yard run late in the fourth.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
John Carroll has won four straight against Heidelberg.
Austin Crow registered his fourth sack of the year, a new single-season high for the junior.
The 188 yards of total offense were the fewest since October 11, 2008 -- when HU amassed 167 yards in a 41-0 loss to Ohio Northern University.
