Box Score TIFFIN, Ohio – A steady drizzle did not dampen the mood at Hoernemann Stadium as the Heidelberg University women's soccer team rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit to stun Bluffton University in overtime, 3-2.
Marisa Mowery tallied the golden goal 57 seconds into overtime – her first goal of the season and first since her freshman year.
FIRST HALF
Bluffton (4-5) got on the board in the seventh minute off a throw in by Ashley Keller. The ball bounced into the penalty area where Beth Snyder chipped it over HU goalkeeper Alexandra Farmer.
The same play worked later in the half. Snyder made the run, heading the ball over Farmer in the 44th minute.
Each side had eight shots in the period.
SECOND HALF
Heidelberg (5-5) cut the lead in half in the 58th minute on Talia Tobin's second goal of the season. Tobin was on the receiving end of a cross from the right corner by Amanda Kilway. After Bluffton goalkeeper Ashley Knippen came out to try to intercept the pass, Tobin had an empty net with which to work.
The Student Princes found an equalizer in the 66th minute. Kilway ran onto a well-paced through ball from Kristen Keenan. Kilway's first touch was a strike that snuck in the side netting on the back post.
OVERTIME
Heidelberg controlled the ball early and maintained possession down the right side. Keenan struck a ball from distance that Knippen was forced to knuckle over the crossbar.
On the ensuing corner kick, Rathfon's service rattled around inside the six before Mowery put her foot on it.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
The game was originally slated for a 4 p.m. start on the grass at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex. The rainy forecast forced the move to the artificial surface at Hoernemann Stadium.
Heidelberg finished the non-conference slate with a 5-5 record – the most wins since the 2010 squad won five games outside of the OAC.
For the season, 10 of the 12 Heidelberg goals have come from freshmen.
The game was Heidelberg's first overtime game of the season. Bluffton and Heidelberg went into overtime last season, with the Beavers emerging with the win.
QUOTES
Head coach Nick Spell on the first half and adjustments: "Obviously you never want to go down 2-0 in the first half. I have to give it to Bluffton, they are a very, very hard working team and they scored two hard-working goals. We just challenged our team at halftime and switched a couple things up. It's great to see our team have that resiliency and come back and finish it in overtime."
Spell on the overtime goal: "We did a great job of doing what we want to do for 90 minutes...we were able to spread them out, switch the point of attack and we were able to get a corner. Danielle put a nice ball in and it was just a hustle goal by Mowery to finish it."
