Box Score BEREA, Ohio – The 2014-15 season for the Heidelberg University women's basketball team came to a close on Tuesday, as they were unable to mount their second big comeback in as many days. After the Student Princes scored the first basket of the game, it was all-Baldwin Wallace from that point on, as the hosts built a lead that was as big as 29 in the first half. The Student Princes battled, but it was not enough as that lead proved to be too much, as the Berg fell 85-64.
It was the final game in the careers of seniors Abbey Geraghty and Paige Ricketts, who both played roles in leading Heidelberg to their first OAC Tournament win in 11 years on Monday. Ricketts finished this game with three points, six rebounds, and three steals while Geraghty scored a pair, pulled down three rebounds, and recorded a team-high three blocks coming off of the bench.
KEY STATS
Baldwin Wallace (20-6, 14-4 OAC) shot lights out in the first half, going 4-of-5 from behind the 3-point line and shooting 53.6% from the field as they built up a large advantage.
With Heidelberg committing 23 fouls compared to just 10 by BW, the hosts found themselves on the free throw line often. The Yellow Jackets made 28-of-32 (87.5%) from the charity stripe in the game, helping hold the Tricolor down.
Heidelberg was out-rebounded 40-27 in the game, a stat that the Berg usually controls. The advantage in rebounding allowed the hosts to score 16 second-chance points compared to just one by the Student Princes.
FIRST HALF
The Tricolor got things started the right way when Carli Patrick made a layup just over a minute into the contest to give Heidelberg a 2-0 lead.
The host Yellow Jackets responded, and in a big way, going on a 21-2 run at that point to take control of the game early, leading by 17 at the 13:44 mark.
That large deficit continued for the remainder of the half and ballooned out to 29 with under two minutes to play, but an old-fashioned 3-point play by Ricketts and a trey by Kate Brickner at the buzzer made the score 45-22 at the break.
SECOND HALF
BW opened the second half much like the first, draining a 3-pointer to open things up. Heidelberg responded quickly, however, as Brickner hit another trey to match the Yellow Jackets with 19:02 to play.
Trailing by 20 or more the rest of the way, the Student Princes could not make a push to get back into the game, as Baldwin Wallace matched virtually every basket by the Berg.
A pair of consecutive buckets, a jumper by Allie Hawkins and a 3-pointer by Brickner, brought the deficit back down to 20 at the 8:44 mark. That would be all the closer Heidelberg would get, however, as 10 straight made free throws by BW kept the lead at a margin that was too big. The Yellow Jackets went on to win by the final score of 85-64.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Brickner scored a career-high 18 points in the contest, shooting an impressive 4-of-5 from behind the 3-point line. 13 of her 16 came in the second half, as she was able to find open shots around the BW defense.
Theresa Jackson, coming off of a 29-point performance against Mount Union, followed that up with a team-high 21 points against Baldwin Wallace. Despite getting off to a tough start, she continued to battle for her shot and found her groove as the game wore on.
