Box Score BEREA – As of late, Tressel Field at George Finnie Stadium at Baldwin Wallace University has been a home away from home for the student-athletes of Heidelberg University. In 2013, running back Cartel Brooks set an NCAA All-Divisions record with 465 yards rushing. In 2014, the men's soccer team rallied from a 3-0 halftime hole to stun BW in overtime of the OAC semifinals, 4-3.
On Tuesday, HU's women's soccer team was outshot 31-5, but managed to pull out a 1-0 victory over the Yellow Jackets. For Heidelberg, it was their first win over BW since a 1-0 win in 2011.
With the victory, the Student Princes evened their record to 6-6, 1-1 in the OAC.
FIRST HALF
Early, in the 15th minute, Alex Elliott's shot hit the crossbar – a precursor of things to come for Baldwin Wallace (7-4-2, 1-1 OAC).
In the 29th minute, Baldwin Wallace was, again, inches away from getting on the board. After a corner kick opportunity sailed through the penalty area, the Yellow Jackets regrouped and played the ball back in. Lauren Haynam sent a shot toward goal that ricocheted off the crossbar and back down. Alex Elliott got a foot on the rebound, but HU goalkeeper Alexandra Farmer snared it, diving to her right.
Moments later, Rachel Bender hit the crossbar again – and Heidelberg was fortunate that the ball bounced away harmlessly.
Heidelberg was outshot 19-1 in the first 45 minutes. Baldwin Wallace sent eight shots on goal.
SECOND HALF
The Student Princes struck first blood. Late in the 56th minute, the Student Princes sent a vertical ball through the center toward Amanda Kilway. As the ball bounced ahead, BW goalkeeper Emily Tallmadge came out to play it. Two yards outside the penalty area, Tallmadge inexplicably caught the bouncer and was issued a yellow card. On the ensuing restart, Denise Bowes tickled the twine on the left side with a rocket, giving Heidelberg a 1-0 lead. The goal came on HU's fourth shot of the match.
Heidelberg had an opportunity to ice the game in the 86th minute. Kilway broke free down the right side and sent a cross in to her left. Danielle Rathfon, at full speed, was one step behind putting it in.
Baldwin Wallace finished with 31 shots, compared to just five for the Tricolor. Farmer made 12 saves in the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Wednesday's goal was the second of the season for Bowes. Her other goal, which came in the 3-0 season opening win over Defiance, also came via a restart.
Farmer picked up her third clean sheet of the season.
The lone goal in the 2011 win over BW, scored by Kelsey Hogan, also came off of a set piece.
QUOTES
Heidelberg head coach Nick Spell about Denise Bowes: "Denise stepped up with confidence and bent it in ... We always say that when you have an opportunity, you gotta finish."
Spell on the play of Farmer: "For a freshman goalkeeper to play like that -- to be a rock – was great ... They put up 31 shots, 12 on frame, and for her to come up big like that was great. I have been impressed with the growth she has shown in just a half season."
