BEREA, Ohio -- In a critical conference showdown, the Heidelberg University Softball team settled for a split at Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday. HU took the opener, 9-2, but dropped the nightcap, 8-5. With four games remaining in the regular season, Heidelberg moved to 22-13 overall and 5-7 in the OAC.
GAME ONE: BERG 9-11-0 BW 2-7-2
Down 1-0 in the top of the third, Heidelberg had two out and two on.
Adyson Bowe delivered, launching a three-run homer to center.
HU added to the lead when noted Marion Motley historian
Alexis Burton unleashed a majestic solo homer to right center to start the fourth.
Ahead 4-2 in the sixth, Heidelberg tacked on five additional runs.
Abbie Marshall roped a two-run double to center, driving in
Ashlynne McAdow and
Leah Arnett. Later in the inning,
Cara Meyer hit a two-out, bases loaded double that cleared the bases. HU led, 9-2, and would go on to win by that same margin.
Haley Gockstetter (W, 14-3) was sharp once again. The sophomore hurled a complete game, limiting BW to two runs on seven hits. She fanned two and walked none.
GAME TWO: BW 8-13-1 BERG 5-9-3
The second game didn't go so hot. Heidelberg sent seven to the plate in the top of the first, but only managed one run, coming on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Arnett.
BW plated three in the first and four in the second, taking a 7-1 lead.
Bowe doubled in two in the fifth, but BW answered with one in the bottom of the inning to regain momentum.
Heidelberg brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but was unable to extend the contest.
Taylor Forrest singled and moved to second on a one-out single by
Hannah Hashman. An infield single by Bowe loaded the bases for Meyer. Meyer doubled home two with a hit to left, but BW escaped with a pop out and a fly out.
