TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University Baseball team was tripped up in a non-conference game on a picturesque Sunday in Peaceful Valley. The Student Princes were unable to maintain momentum after a strong first inning, falling 10-9.
Heidelberg slipped to 13-14 overall. John Carroll improved to 17-7. The teams will meet for a rematch on April 30, at Progressive Field in Cleveland.
Down 1-0 in the first, Heidelberg pummeled the JCU starter.
Sam Schneider was hit by a pitch, then stole second.
Braedy Limke drove him in with a single to right center. After
Thomas McGuire walked,
Grant Bomer launched a majestic three-run home to left center. With two outs,
Logan Winstead also homered to nearly the same spot as Bomer's.
Up 5-1, HU yielded two in the second and one in the third. In the sixth, JCU took the lead with three more. Down 7-5, The Berg got one back in the bottom of the sixth.
Cohen Sendelbach doubled and scored on a single from
Carter Dubois.
Trailing 10-6 in the eighth, the Student Princes scratched three across. Winstead, who was hit by a pitch to begin the frame, scored on a passed ball. Schneider dropped in a two-run single inside the left field line. The rally fizzled out with the tying run on third.
JCU held on in the ninth, aided by a 6-4-3 double play.
Heidelberg had 11 hits on the day, including three by Bomer.
Weather permitting, Heidelberg will host Denison on Tuesday and Wittenberg on Wednesday. Both contests are slated for 4 p.m. starts in Peaceful Valley.
