ALBION, Michigan -- The Heidelberg University Softball team swept a Sunday doubleheader at Albion College, winning the opener, 5-4, in eight innings, then taking the second game, 10-5. With the sweep, Heidelberg improved to 12-4 on the season -- their best 16-game start since the 2016 team started 14-2.
GAME ONE: BERG 5-9-1 ALBION 4-9-1
Starting at 10:30 a.m. to beat the weather, the Britons plated single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth before the 'Berg bats woke up.
Alexis Burton led off the sixth with an infield hit, then pinch runner
Abbey Hoertz moved around the bases and scored on a two-out single by
Cara Meyer.
Ellie Tressler followed with an RBI single to left.
Still trailing by a run in the final frame,
Adyson Bowe ripped a leadoff double inside the bag at third.
Megan Miller launched a fly ball to the warning track that was caught, but allowed Bowe a chance to tag and motor to third. Burton tied the game with a fly ball to medium-deep center that was far enough to let Bowe slide in safely.
In the top of the eighth,
Leah Arnett and
Hannah Hashman set the table, as they often do, via international tiebreaker and an infield single. Hashman stole second before Meyer slashed a line drive single to right, plating two.
The Britons scratched one across in the bottom of the eighth, but
Haley Gockstetter secured the win by punching out the final Albion player -- stranding two. She went the distance, striking out six.
GAME TWO: BERG 10-14-4 ALBION 5-9-5
Heidelberg scored in every inning but the sixth. Tressler singled in a run in the first and Burton did the same in the second.
Abbie Marshall followed suit in the third, tying the game at three.
Burton and
Lacey Fickes hit back-to-back doubles in the fourth, giving HU a 4-3 lead. Arnett smashed a liner off the tip of the glove of the first baseman, reaching first and sending Fickes to third. After a stolen base, Hashman reached on an error and drove in Fickes. Meyer capped the four-run outburst with a double to the base of the wall in center that scored two.
Arnett lifted a sacrifice fly in the fifth, scoring Miller.
The Berg, ahead 8-5 in the seventh, added two in the final frame. Burton doubled with one out. Pinch runner
Ashlynne McAdow scored on a double to the gap in left center by Arnett. Hashman slapped a single to the right side, allowing Arnett to score.
Taylor Forrest started and threw a complete game, picking up the win. She struck out two.
